About us
Welcome to the Brocks Gap DNA Project!
This is our home site, where everyone whose ancestors hail from Brocks Gap, Rockingham County, Virginia, and the surrounding area, can gather and learn together from our DNA. Please don't hesitate to ask Bonnie (serving as the admin) your questions about what your test results mean, what more you can do now that you have them, and what other tests are worth taking. We'll be able to compare all kinds of results -- from the autosomal Family Finder, to Y-DNA and mtDNA, among our project members. We'll find some new links between families, and maybe disprove others. We'd love to have you with us on this exciting adventure.
If you haven't yet tested, or are adding a new test, we recommend:
- Family Finder -- everyone!
- Y-DNA 37 or 67 markers (males only) -- if interested in genealogy and origins of your surname lineage
- mtDNA full sequence -- if interested in maternal ancestry & origins
News
Currently, we are actively researching the descendants of William Cherryholmes, Sr (born about 1719 in Yorkshire, England, died in Rockingham Co. before 1800). If you are descended from him in any line, please join our project, and get in touch! There's a large DNA segment shared between several project members that may come down to us from the Cherryholmes family. Many Brocks Gap people are descended from his granddaughter, Elizabeth Cherryholmes, who was married to Emanuel Roadcap, and there are plenty of William's other descendants we need to learn more about.
