The Boardman Family DNA Project is sponsored by the Boardman-Boremans Family Association to record family DNA data for the future, and to assist the research of living individuals seeking to solve or prove relationships in the past. Our Boardman family's American progenitors were cousins Samuel and Thomas Boreman. The family came from Claydon, Oxfordshire, England, with Thomas arriving at Ipswich, MA ca 1634, and Samuel arriving at Ipswich in 1638. Samuel was of Wethersfield, Hartford Co., CT by 1641. The family name changed with the loss of their local dialect, becoming Bordman ca 1725, and Boardman by 1780. Though different branches changed spellings at different times, all proven branches have followed this variation. Family members who remained in England are known to have used the following variations: Borma, Borman, Boreman, Boarman, Bourman, Burman, and Bowerman. The addition of the letter D never occurred in England, and doesn't appear to have occurred in any of the other British-speaking colonies. The name having changed over time can sometimes make family searches difficult. I know of numerous different Boardman, Boreman, and Boarman families that were represented here in the United States in earlier times and in the present. Unless you have an excellent paper trail, these individuals become easily confused. Many different Boardman-Boreman family DNA results are included within the project. It helps to differentiate the different families. The project is open to all of these individuals to perhaps find others that are related.
