Welcome to this international Y-DNA project! The first in New England was George Soule, who arrived on the Mayflower in 1620 as a servant to relatively wealthy Pilgrim Edward Winslow. As descendants spread west from New England to Canada and other foreign countries, the surname modulated and includes Sole, Soules, and Sowles.
Many of George Soule's descendants have joined the Mayflower Society in Plymouth MA. This Society is in the process of publishing the descendants from George Soule though the first six generations. As part of this Five Generations Project, the newer work on the descendants of George Soule superceeds the older works by Ridlon, and also by the Mayflower Society.

The Soule Kindred in America, formed in 1967, is a non-profit organization with members in France, Great Britain and Canada as well as the United States. Membership is not limited to persons with the surname Sole, Soule, Soules, Sowl, Sowle, or Sowles. To join, see the website: soulekindred.org ($25/yr). Scholarships ($1000) are available from the Soule Kindred in America for proven descendants of George Soule.
The Y-DNA test results from proven descendants will be matched with Y-DNA test results from other proposed descendants, and from persons in the UK. It is thus hoped to identify more descendancies from George Soule and to establish his parentage.

Now in 2017 there is finally a Y-DNA match in England and Scotland which appears to shed light on the origin of George Soule (b. ca 1601). The associated surname is Forrest. the simplest explanation is parallel descent from a brother of George Soule. This brother died about the winter of 1618/19, leaving a pregnant widow, who apparently remarried a Forrest and fled to Scotland.
Requirements
A Surname Project traces members of a family that share a common surname. They are of the most interest in cultures where surnames are passed on from father to son like the Y-Chromosome. This project is for males taking a Y-Chromosome DNA (Y-DNA) test. Thus, the individual who tests must be a male who wants to check his direct paternal line (father's father's father's...) with a Y-DNA12, Y-DNA37, Y-DNA67, or Y-DNA111 test and who has one of the surnames listed for the project. Females do not carry their father's Y-DNA. Females who would like to check their father's direct paternal line can have a male relative with his surname order a Y-DNA test. Females can also order an mtDNA test for themselves such as the mtDNAPlus test or the mtFullSequence test and participate in an mtDNA project. Both men and women may take our autosomal Family Finder test to discover recent relationships across all family lines.
