Description
Welcome to the McGraw and variants Y-DNA Project! Our goal is to explore the genetic history of families whose surnames are connected to “Mac Craith”, including McGraw, Megraw, McGrath, MacGraw, Magrath, McCraw, McGrew and others.
A central focus of our work is identifying how men with Mac Craith-related surnames are connected to one another through their direct paternal lines. We also examine whether these family lines can be linked to recognized Gaelic lineages, including major dynastic groups and well-documented family branches across Ireland and Scotland.
We are particularly interested in participants whose paternal ancestry traces back to the nine counties of historic Ulster: Down, Antrim, Tyrone, Londonderry, Donegal, Fermanagh, Cavan, Monaghan, and Armagh; and the six counties of Munster: Clare, Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Tipperary, and Waterford. If you have known or suspected roots in these regions, we encourage you to join.
However, even if your origins lie outside these counties or are unknown, anyone with a Mac Craith-related surname is welcome to participate.
By joining the project, you will add your paternal line to a wider study of Mac Craith-related families, where you can compare your results with those of others who share related surnames and better understand your paternal line’s relationships, origins, and movements.
Requirements
A Surname Project traces members of a family that share a common surname. They are of the most interest in cultures where surnames are passed on from father to son like the Y-Chromosome. This project is for males taking a Y-Chromosome DNA (Y-DNA) test. Thus, the individual who tests must be a male who wants to check his direct paternal line (father's father's father's...) with a Y-DNA12, Y-DNA37, Y-DNA67, or Y-DNA111 test and who has one of the surnames listed for the project. Females do not carry their father's Y-DNA. Females who would like to check their father's direct paternal line can have a male relative with his surname order a Y-DNA test. Females can also order an mtDNA test for themselves such as the mtDNAPlus test or the mtFullSequence test and participate in an mtDNA project. Both men and women may take our autosomal Family Finder test to discover recent relationships across all family lines.
