Description
The Flanders-Flemish DNA Project welcomes any person whose ancestry can be traced back to the Flemish region. Nowadays, this does not only encompass the old county of Flanders, but the entire Dutch-speaking northern half of Belgium, namely the provinces of Antwerpen, Vlaams-Brabant, Limburg, Oost-Vlaanderen and West-Vlaanderen. Historically, the county of Flanders also extended into the northwest of France (a region generally known as ‘French Flanders’, with cities such as Saint-Omer, Dunkerque, Lille, Arras, Douai, Guînes, Boulogne-sur-Mer), and e.g. in Saint-Omer the people have even retained their Flemish dialect as recently as the 20th century.
If you already have an FTDNA account and you have evidence of Flemish ancestry in the recent or more distant past, you can join the project by clicking the JOIN button in the upper right corner of this page, after logging in to your personal account.
Please agree that results of the test will be allowed to be posted at this project on Flanders-Flemish DNA. It is recommended to also join your specific surname and/or Y-haplogroup project, if available, and to upload your DNA to Y-Search and Mitomap, public data bases that allow to find matches.
Requirements
A Geographic Project connects individuals who believe their direct line comes from a specific location. The Dual Geographic Projects are for individuals who order an mtDNA or Y-DNA test. Either their direct maternal line (mother's mother's mother's...) or direct paternal line (father's father's father's...) originates from this area.
