Stewart - Variants: Stewert, Steward, Stuart, Steuart
English, Scottish: occupational name, status name from Middle English stiward ‘steward’ (Old English stigweard ‘household guardian’). In the Anglo-Saxon period this title was used of an officer controlling the domestic affairs of a household, especially of the royal household. After the Norman Conquest it was also used more widely as the native equivalent of SENESCALL, for the steward of a manor or manager of an estate. In Scotland the term was also used of a magistrate originally appointed by the king to administer crown lands forming a stewartry.
Stewart or Stuart is the surname of one of the great families of Scotland, the royal family of Scotland from the 14th century and of England from 1603, when James VI of Scotland acceded to the English throne as James I, until 1688. The House of Stewart is descended from a Norman baron of Breton origin, Walter FitzAlan (1106–1177), who was appointed High Steward of Scotland by King David I in about 1150. His descendants held this hereditary office in successive generations until, in 1371, Robert Stewart, 7th Hereditary High Steward, succeeded to the throne of Scotland. Many branches of the Stuart family remained in Britain after the flight in 1688 of the head of the house of Stuart, King James II of England and VII of Scotland, but not every bearer of the surname can claim relationship with the royal house, even in Scotland. Every great house in medieval Scotland and England had its steward, and in many cases the office gave rise to a hereditary surname.

Requirements
A Surname Project traces members of a family that share a common surname. They are of the most interest in cultures where surnames are passed on from father to son like the Y-Chromosome. This project is for males taking a Y-Chromosome DNA (Y-DNA) test. Thus, the individual who tests must be a male who wants to check his direct paternal line (father's father's father's...) with a Y-DNA12, Y-DNA37, Y-DNA67, or Y-DNA111 test and who has one of the surnames listed for the project. Females do not carry their father's Y-DNA. Females who would like to check their father's direct paternal line can have a male relative with his surname order a Y-DNA test. Females can also order an mtDNA test for themselves such as the mtDNAPlus test or the mtFullSequence test and participate in an mtDNA project. Both men and women may take our autosomal Family Finder test to discover recent relationships across all family lines.
