Description
In 2004, the stated goal of the GRANT DNA Surname Project was to provide a path for family researchers to use the DNA from their Y-Chromosome as a tool in breaking through genealogical brick walls. The Y-DNA markers are specific to men only and are passed virtually unchanged from father to son for generations. After less than two months of testing, the scope of the project changed quickly because of International considerations related to DNA testing for the Clan Grant and Septs of the Clan Grant. In retrospect, all of this blended together nicely as we met the needs of all involved while protecting the privacy of all involved.
The testing is as simple as swabbing the inside of your cheeks (no blood is required). If you elect to participate, we'd ask that you choose the 37 marker test as a minimum starting point. We're happy to discuss this further if you have questions and/or concerns. Keep in mind that you can always upgrade your testing in the future using your original DNA sample. Family Tree DNA has proven themselves as leaders and innovators in the realm of DNA testing.
This project is run by volunteers. Currently, the project is being administered by Co-Founder Allen Grant (sagrant2007@comcast.net), Alastair Grant (aggrant@rogers.com) and Geoffrey Grant (gigrant74@gmail.com).
I'm not as active as the others. But, you can still contact me directly at govols@carolina.rr.com if you have any questions or concerns.
Kind Regards...jon grant
Requirements
A Surname Project traces members of a family that share a common surname. They are of the most interest in cultures where surnames are passed on from father to son like the Y-Chromosome. This project is for males taking a Y-Chromosome DNA (Y-DNA) test. Thus, the individual who tests must be a male who wants to check his direct paternal line (father's father's father's...) with a Y-DNA12, Y-DNA37, Y-DNA67, or Y-DNA111 test and who has one of the surnames listed for the project. Females do not carry their father's Y-DNA. Females who would like to check their father's direct paternal line can have a male relative with his surname order a Y-DNA test. Females can also order an mtDNA test for themselves such as the mtDNAPlus test or the mtFullSequence test and participate in an mtDNA project. Both men and women may take our autosomal Family Finder test to discover recent relationships across all family lines.
