Description
Dean, Deane & variant surnames. Welcome to everyone researching the DEAN surname! A Surname Project studies Y-Chromosome DNA (Y-DNA) lineages associated with a surname or group of surnames.
The purpose of this Surname Project is to group male project members having the Dean, Deane etc. surname by Haplogroup and genetic distance thereby providing a method to discover genealogical connections and ancestral lineages and to support or contradict relationship theories.
The Y-37 and Y-111 STR DNA tests provide your predicted Haplogroup and finds matches to support genealogical research.
The Big Y-700 test is a much deeper analysis that confirms your current subclade / genetic branch on the Y-Tree of Mankind, your paternal genetic lineage. A single change in the Y-DNA chromosome that originates in one man is passed down father to son each generation. That mutation, called Single Nucleotide Polymorphism or SNP, (pronounced "snip") DEFINES THAT SPECIFIC LINE of descendants from that one man and then succeeding generations adds additional new SNPs that creating new genetic branches. Your direct paternal line going back thousands of years is defined by these SNPs. Your paternal cousins, including very distant cousins that you do not know, will share some of the same SNPs that you have. New SNP matches, from current tests, will create new genetic branches on the Y-Tree. These genetic connections allow you to discover previously unknown relationships and break through genealogical barriers.
To ORDER A TEST, click on "Join" in the upper right of this page.
To VIEW the Y-DNA results, click on "DNA results" on this page, then click on either "classic" or "colorized."
If your Y-DNA results are displayed under the "ungrouped" heading and you think they should be grouped with some of the other kits, e-mail any of the project administrators and ask them to review your results.
To facilitate the goals of this surname project all members should provide their earliest known Dean ancestor and include a family tree. From your Home Page click on "Your Name/Kit No." and select "Account Settings", select "GENEALOGY", select "Earliest Known Ancestors", input your verified direct line earliest known ancestors in the following format: Name, birth year & location, death year & location.
An older version of the Dean surname YDNA project web page, no longer being updated, can be found at http://freepages.rootsweb.com/~ladeanxx/genealogy/dnaresults.html
Requirements
A Surname Project traces members of a family that share a common surname. They are of the most interest in cultures where surnames are passed on from father to son like the Y-Chromosome. This project is for males taking a Y-Chromosome DNA (Y-DNA) test. Thus, the individual who tests must be a male who wants to check his direct paternal line (father's father's father's...) with a Y-DNA12, Y-DNA37, Y-DNA67, or Y-DNA111 test and who has one of the surnames listed for the project. Females do not carry their father's Y-DNA. Females who would like to check their father's direct paternal line can have a male relative with his surname order a Y-DNA test. Females can also order an mtDNA test for themselves such as the mtDNAPlus test or the mtFullSequence test and participate in an mtDNA project. Both men and women may take our autosomal Family Finder test to discover recent relationships across all family lines.
