The surname Wederich appears in written documents as early as the middle ages.

In the Netherlands and Flanders, the name Wederich appears in charters listed as a landowner in 1053 and 1071 and a cleric in 1082. In Germany a Herr Wederich is listed as having donated his west field to a new monestary in 1072.

Today, however, the name appears to be extremely rare.

My earliest known ancestors date from the early 1800's and were from Wilkowischen, East Prussia. In the mid late 1800's my great grandfather migrated to the USA and settled in New Jersey.

Although the name Wederich appears in census, Civil War and other records, we have not yet found any other Wederichs in the USA. It is assumed that the name may have changed spelling through the years and across borders.
