About us

The purpose of the Tynes/Tines DNA Project is to use genetic technology to determine the history and relatedness of Tynes and Tines families the world over. We originally began as a sub-project of the Tyner surname project; but as genetic testing proved that the Tynes and Tyner families were not related, in 2010 we broke Tynes off into its own project.

Our goal is to get at least one (and preferably three or more) male members (who have the Tynes or Tines surname) from each of the Tynes/Tines branches to take a Y-DNA test of at least 37 markers. Due to the loss of paper records from early Virginia and the Carolinas, we cannot prove how the various branches are related to each other. With a sufficient number of testers from each branch, we should finally be able to overcome the lack of paper records and discover the history of our families.
