Project Background

This Y-chromosome DNA project includes five similar Germanic surnames: STRAUB, TRAUB, STRUB, STROOP, and STRAUBE. The most common Anglicized spelling for STRAUB, STRUB, and STROOP is STROUP. Similarly, the most common Anglicized spelling of TRAUB is TROUP. Surname STRAUBE is not usually confused with the others because it and its variations are pronounced in two syllables, while the others are pronounced in one syllable.

We have included a family surnamed CRUMP and another surnamed BELEW each of which has a tested descendant with an NPE in his lineage indicating he is genetically a STROUP. We also have a BARNES line in the project because one line of a STROUP family made a deliberate name change from STROUP to BARNES. Just these specific families are included, however. If you are one of these three surnames, please don't request to join the STRAUB project unless you already know you're a member of one of these specific families or until after you've been tested and turn out to match a STROUP family. You'll know if you're one of them because you'll see one or more STROUP matches on the "Y-DNA Matches" tab of your member page — and I will see them on the project administrative pages, too, and will probably invite you to join.
