Project Background:

This Y-chromosome DNA project includes five similar Germanic surnames: STRAUB, TRAUB, STRUB, STROOP, and STRAUBE. The most common Anglicized spelling for STRAUB, STRUB, and STROOP is STROUP. Similarly, the most common Anglicized spelling of TRAUB is TROUP. In the U.S., conversions between STRAUB/STROUP and TRAUB/TROUP are known to have occurred. Surname STRAUBE is not usually confused with the others because it and its variations are pronounced in two syllables, while the others are pronounced in one syllable. There is a line of BELEWs, of Jefferson Co., MO, and a line of CRUMPs from Gaston Co., NC, who are genetically STROUP, so these are included in the project.

Project Goals:

The goals of the project are: 1) to elucidate the origin and relationship of the many STRAUB/etc. immigrants to the United States and identify their lines of descent; 2) to establish the relationship, if any, between five possibly related Germanic surnames, namely, STRAUB, TRAUB, STRUB, STROOP, and STRAUBE -- and their many spelling variations; 3) to help living descendants discover, define, and prove their genealogies; and 4) to aid those who find an "NPE" has proven them to be genetically related to these families. Please note that, to participate meaningfully, you will need to share your patrilineal line and that this sharing is a requirement, not an option, for joining (with the understanding that the identity of the test subject will not be revealed by the project admin).

Project News:

2004 Jul 12 - the STRAUB/etc. DNA Project was opened.
2008 Aug 27 - as of this date, the project has 47 members, with results returned for 43 (plus one individual extracted from the SMGF database). We have now identified twenty-two independent origins for these surnames!
