Project Goals
The broadest goal of this project is to establish the Y-chromosome DNA markers for all St. George families. This should stand as a lasting resource for researchers to compare their DNA and to identify their surname origins. If there is any doubt as to which St. George progenitor they descend from, the DNA comparison will sort this out. But the project welcomes a variety of goals which are specific to anyone researching a surname that is pertinent to this project.
For example: My most personal goal is to establish through genetic evidence that my family descends from Louis St. Jorre dit Sergerie. By comparing my Y-Chromosome DNA with another male who has a paper trail leading back to Louis St. Jorre dit Sergerie, we both confirm our pedigree.
This information will also be helpful to other researchers of the St. George name in Quebec as it has been long thought that all St. Georges who descend from a Quebec ancestor must descend from one of the Laporte dit St-Georges families.
In addition, as the project expands, it should also help establish whether the de St. Jorres of France are related to the St. Jorre dit Sergeries of Quebec.
Other goals that I invite participation in developing are:
a) There are now three known St. George progenitors from Quebec. DNA research could help researchers learn which of these families they should be researching.
b) There are two Laporte dit St-Georges progenitors: Jacques and Pierre. A relationship between these two men is likely, but has not been proven with traditional genealogical sources. A DNA comparison of two known descendants, one of Jacques and one of Pierre, could help solve this.
These are all just given as examples from the administrator's personal hopes for the project. The project is not limited to them. We welcome an expansion of goals and will state them here as the project grows.
