The St. George surname, variants, and aliases have been traced to several progenitors including:
1. Jacques Laporte dit St-Georges (French Canadian, born 1627 France)
2. Pierre Laporte dit St-Georges (French Canadian, born in France)
3. Louis St. Jorre dit Sergerie (French Canadian, born 1704, Basse-Normandie, France)
4. Various de Saint Jore families of Normandy and Brittany, France.
5. Various St. Georges of the UK
This list is preliminary and will continue to grow.
For researchers of any of these names, DNA comparison of living male descendants can be an invaluable research tool. It can help to confirm ancestry, but it can also help with more global and puzzling research problems.
Basically, it works like this: Y-chromosome DNA is passed along from father to son generation after generation virtually unchanged.
So for example, all male descendants of Jacques Laporte dit St-George who inherited the surname Laporte or St. George also inherited Jacques's Y-chromosome DNA.
Two distant male cousins, both descended from Jacques, and both having the surname St. George or Laporte, would match Y-chromosome DNA markers almost exactly.

Project Background, Goals, Results and News are copyright of the specific Surname Project Project Goals: The broadest goal of this project is to establish the Y-chromosome DNA markers for all St. George families. This should stand as a lasting resource for researchers to compare their DNA and to identify their surname origins. If there is any doubt as to which St. George progenitor they descend from, the DNA comparison will sort this out. But the project welcomes a variety of goals which are specific to anyone researching a surname that is pertinent to this project.
For example: My most personal goal is to establish through genetic evidence that my family descends from Louis St. Jorre dit Sergerie. By comparing my Y-Chromosome DNA with another male who has a paper trail leading back to Louis St. Jorre dit Sergerie, we both confirm our pedigree.
This information will also be helpful to other researchers of the St. George name in Quebec as it has been long thought that all St. Georges who descend from a Quebec ancestor must descend from one of the Laporte dit St-Georges families.
In addition, as the project expands, it should also help establish whether the de St. Jorres of France are related to the St. Jorre dit Sergeries of Quebec.
Other goals that I invite participation in developing are:
a) There are now three known St. George progenitors from Quebec. DNA research could help researchers learn which of these families they should be researching.
b) There are two Laporte dit St-Georges progenitors: Jacques and Pierre. A relationship between these two men is likely, but has not been proven with traditional genealogical sources. A DNA comparison of two known descendants, one of Jacques and one of Pierre, could help solve this.
These are all just given as examples from the administrator's personal hopes for the project. The project is not limited to them. We welcome an expansion of goals and will state them here as the project grows. | Family Tree DNA - Genealogy by Genetics, Ltd. Please click on the results tab above for the latest results update. This project will remain open indefinitely over a period of many years. We are still welcoming new participants. For as little as $99 (US) you can order a kit and participate.

The first results available for comparison between kit numbers 42310 and 45343 are in. The first 12 markers of these individuals match exactly! Please see the project results.

We are pleased to announce that a third participant has joined the project. His ancestor is a Julien de St. Jore of Normandy, France, believed to share a common ancestor with Louis St. Jorre dit Sergerie from the same region.
So far, all participants are descendants of a St. Jorre or de St. Jore. Test results from these three participants will be available for comparison here in the month of January.
15 October 2005
Today we welcome the second participant to the project. He is another descendant of Louis St. Jorre dit Sergerie. The results of his test will post here in the month of January. | Family Tree DNA - Genealogy by Genetics, Ltd. The results for kit number 46491 came in recently. This participant is descended from Julien de St. Jore of Normandy, France, born circa 1700. We expected to find a match here between kit numbers 46491, 42310, and 45343 because the two ancestors, Julien de St. Jore and Louis St. Jorre dit Sergerie, have been traced to the same region of France at about the same timeframe. However, there is no genetic match.
We're hoping at this point to build a larger base of participants with de St. Jorre or St. Jorre ancestors.
St. Jorre is an uncommon name, and its origins remain a mystery. It could be that several unrelated families adopted the surname about the same time, rather than there being one original St. Jorre. Having a larger base of participants with the St. Jorre name would help to begin sorting out this situation.
8 March 2006
Kit numbers 42310 and 45343 match on 36 of 37 markers. This denotes a genetic distance of 1. Both participants with kit numbers 42310 and 45343 have good paper evidence for their descent from Louis St. Jorre dit Sergerie. They have thus corroborated each other's relationship to Louis St. Jorre dit Sergerie. This also establishes the y-chromosome markers against which other descendants of Louis St. Jorre dit Sergerie may compare their test results.

The first of the project results are in. Two participants in this project have matched the first 12 markers exactly. This confirms the common ancestry of kit numbers 42310 and 45343 who also have paper trails back to Louis St. Jorre dit Sergerie. | Family Tree DNA - Genealogy by Genetics, Ltd.
