Project Surnames:Project Background: The SSDP ia a ten year (2002 through 2012) worldwide genetic research study on DNA Family Groups for the surname Staple, Staples and variants of the surname. It is open to any who carry our surname that wish to use DNA as a tool to increase their knowledge about their ancestral family history during the surname era of recorded family connections at each generation.
WHAT DNA WILL AND WILL NOT DO FOR YOU.
1) Y37 test results (Minimum test for membership in the SSDP)will confirm if you have a genetic relatonship to one of our SSDP DNA Family Groups. Note: with questional Y37 matches an upgrade to Y67 is required to confirm relationships in SSDP DNA Family Groups A, B & C (see section on Y RESULTS. You may want to consider starting with the Y-67 test to save the additional added cost of an upgrade ($19.00).
2) If you test positive for one of our SSDP DNA Family Groups, only a genealogy pedigree with proven family connections at each generation will tell you with - WHO, WHEN and WHERE.
3) If you test negative for one of our SSDP DNA Family Groups you will start a new SSDP DNA Family Group.
A list of Y-CHROMOSOME (Y-DNA) and MITOCHONDRIAL (MTDNA)project surnames are found in the "News" section under Y-DNA RESULTS and MTDNA RESULTS.

NOTE:
30 May 2008; FTDNA changes mtDNA Haplogroup U5 sub-clade designations by backtracking, thus this change is not agreed to by the Group Administrator as it does not give the true haplogroup sub-clade.
Haplogroups are used by scientists to track our ancient ancestors during the pre-history era (about 5,800 to 200,000 years ago), thus they have no bearing on our SSDP project research during the surname era.
After reviewing our website, to apply to join our project click on "Request To Join" on the upper left of the page or email the Group Administrator and you will be sent an application which must be completed and returned to the Group Administrator before the ordering of your FTDNA test kit.

Each member or participant is responsible posting all information that is disclosed to the various FTDNA websites and pages such as YSearch, MitoSearch and GEDCOM-Family Tree.
Y-DNA FTDNA MARKERS FOR SURNAME PROJECT:
Y-12-Marker Test:
Alone Y12 test results are irrelevent for determining SSDP DNA Family Group relationships during the surname era.
Y12 is used by the National Geographic Society, Genographic Project to track migrations of modern humans during the pre-surname era.
Y25-Marker Test;
In some cases this test has indicated SSDNA DNA Family Group relationships, both positive and negative, that proved to be wrong when Y37 test reults were given.
Y37-MARKER TEST:
Confirms if a person has a genetic relationship within a SSDP Family Group or starts a new SSDP DNA Family Group. This test is the required test now used by the SSDP.
Y67-MARKER TEST:
Y67-Marker test is recommended for results to prove "Common" and "Odd Random" mutations in SSDP participants Y-DNA, producing an extended and truer haplotype that is used to determine relationships within the various branches of a common ancestors family tree. For example see "Reconstructing the Y-DNA of Peter Staple (c1642-1718/19" at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~staples/pat_research.htm
The Y67 test upgrade from Y37 between members is used to confirm Y-DNA Haplotypes that are in question for any reason.
See the FTDNA website for a list of all their tests offered.
Each member is responsible for paying for their FTDNA Tests. As of 16 June 2008, the following is the Y37 test group rate for new members of the SSDP. FTDNA may change their costs without notice.
SSDP / FTDNA Group Rates for new members:
Y-DNA37: 37-marker Test $189.00, plus S&H, $2.00 USA, plus return postage; $4.00 International, plus return postage.
Y-DNA67: 67-marker test $269.00, plus S&H, $2.00 USA, plus return postage; $4.00 International, plus return postage.
Y37 to Y67-marker Test Upgrade, $99.00.

Project Background, Goals, Results and News are copyright of the specific Surname Project Project Results: USING DNA AS A TOOL TO CONFIRM PREVIOUSLY UNKNOWN STAPLES FAMILY HISTORY
1) THOMAS STAPLES, Created 1628, 1st Baronet of Lissan, Northern Ireland and the search for the 18th BARONET.
The current 17th Baronet of Lissan, N. Ireland Y37 test results matches within the FTDNA approved genetic distance of the Y37 test results of one member from the MATTHEW STAPLES Family Branch. This proves an Y37 DNA relationship between the 17th Baronet of Lissan, and the member of the Matthew Staples Family Branch.
2) MATTHEW STAPLES (d 1771) of Belmont, NS, Canada.
Three members of Matthew’s Family Branch have identical Y25 test results, proving their relationship and Matthew’s Y25 DNA. Research for genealogy records to match Matthew and the Baronet of Lissan, Northern Ireland lineage is ongoing
3) PETER STAPLE (c1642-1718/19) of Kittery, York co., Massachusetts Bay Colony, now Eliot Maine.
Reconstruction of the Y-DNA of Peter Staple (c1642-1718/19). Seven members of this genetic family Branch have various Y-DNA tests. Seven members Y25 tests match, six members that have Y37 test results and four that have Y67 test results also match within a FTDNA approved genetic distance to prove their Y-DNA relationship and reconstruct Peter’s Y-DNA. A worldwide search to locate living relatives of Peter Staple and his ancestral genealogy records notably in England is ongoing.
4) BALLARD HASQUE STAPLETON (1879-1945), born Scott County, VA.
Ballard’s Family Branch has long thought that Ballard was given the surname of his mother REBECCA STAPLETON (c1854-1910) of VA, died Hancock, TN. As of 29 May 2006, test results show that Ballard’s unique YDNA has many matches to another surname. FTDNA Y12, 25 exact Matches 23 of the surname “Bowling” and variations of the spelling; Y25, 4 matches, 3 “Bolling” & “Bowling”; Y37, 2 matches, “Bolling” & “Bowling”. Research for genealogy records to match the two families is ongoing.
5) ROBERT STAPLE (c1550-1755) of Halton, Buckinghamshie, England, and his son JEFFREY STAPLE (c1576-1647) and Jeffrey's son's JOHN STAPLE(bp1608-1683), THOMAS STAPLE(S) (bp1612 or 1614/15-1688), and SAMUEL STAPLE (bp1628-xxxx), all but ROBERT settled in New England during the 1600's. The SSDP DNA Family Group B, has five descendants of Jeffrey, John, Thomas and Samuel, with descendants having a genetic distance proving a family relationship to a common ancestor at FTDNA Y37.
There are seven descendants of the common ancestor identified as ROBERT STAPLES (c1550-1755) by the published and documented account of this family by Gail Staples in the NEHGR V161:95-100,April 2007. Prior to April 2007, Jeffrey and John were thought to be brothers, with Samuel a son of Jeffrey, all from Chard Parish, England and Thomas's ancestry was unknown except for his descendants Y37 results showing he was part of the DNA family group.
This shows how Y37-DNA test results coupled with genealogical records can help identify an unknowned common ancestor and how two members whom have not been able to locate records of their ancestry, now through their Y37 DNA tests know they descend from Robert STAPLE (c1550-1755).
6) WILLIAM THOMAS STAPLES "TOM", all that is known about the ancestry of Tom is that family tradition states he probably came from Philadelphia, PA to Jeffersonville, IN. The Y37 DNA of Tom's great-grandson proves he is a descendant of the family of Robert STAPLE (c1550-1610) of Halton, Bucks., England. | Family Tree DNA - Genealogy by Genetics, Ltd.
