Project Background:

The objective of this project is to determine the earliest possible known Sorrells/Sorrell ancestor with our Y-DNA profile. All American and European Sorrells/Sorrell males are encouraged to participate in order to compile DNA data and determine which families are related. Using proven genealogies many families hopefully can be proven to be related. All phonetic spellings of Sorrells are of interest: e.g. Surles, Sirrells, Sarrells, Surrells, Searles.

Edward Sorrell is found in Wake Co., NC documents after 1771. In 1771 Wake was formed from Orange Co. Edward is found in a few records in Orange Co., but we are still looking for earlier connections. There is strong indication that our Edward is a descendant of the Westmoreland Co., VA Sorrell line, but to date, we have no documented male descendant from the VA line of which to seek a match. Many of Edward's descendants still reside in North Carolina and many moved into middle and western Tennessee.

Joseph Sorrels was born between 1765-1770 in Virginia. He is likely the same Joseph Sorrels found on a 1787 Tax List for Augusta Co, VA. He died between 1830-1832 in Haywood Co, North Carolina. He was married about 1797 in Buncombe Co, NC to Mildred “Millie” (last name unknown). Marriage date is approximated, according to birth of first known child which was 1798. His son Andrew Mitchell Sorrels moved to Texas in later years and the spelling was changed to Sarrels and all descendants from that particular family have used the “a”. On 1810 census there was a Sarah Sorrels living near Joseph & Millie with a couple of older children and her age would make her appropriate for Joseph’s mother but nothing confirmed at present. Joseph and Millie had 10 known children born between 1798 and 1819. Millie died in 1850 while living with daughter Nancy.

Richard Sorrels Sr. was born c 1707, location unknown. He appears in the records of Augusta, Louisa, and Albemarle Cos. Va., but is only known to have lived in Albemarle Co where he died 1774 while employed by Thomas Jefferson. There is a persistent tradition in several branches of the family that he came from Ireland. There is strong circumstantial evidence he was a son or brother of John Sorrell who died 1783 Amherst Co Va. John was said to have come from Dartry Barony, County Monaghan, Ireland by early members of the Dawson family.
