Background

Somerset County is located in the southwestern portion of Pennsylvania bordering the Maryland panhandle to the south.  It is on the spine of the Appalachian Mountain chain, giving it abundant natural resources that attracted a wide range of ethnic groups originating in western and mid-Europe.
