Project Background:
The purpose of this project is to aid genealogists researching the surname RASEY and its many variants through the use of Y-chromosome DNA testing. All RASEY/etc. males are welcome to join the project, but as only males have Y-chromosomes, only male RASEYs can be tested. If you are female, you can have a male RASEY relative submit a sample for your line. For further information, please see the project web page at my genealogy web site:

RASEY Y-chromosome DNA Surname Project: Home Page

To participate meaningfully, testees will need to share their direct male line ancestry back to the earliest known RASEY, either in the form of a pedigree chart or, preferable, family group sheets (excluding living persons). This is a requirement, not an option, for participation in the project. DNA test results, without an accompanying pedigree, are useless.

Project Goals:
The goals of the project are: 1) to help living descendants prove their "on paper" genealogies; 2) to uncover the origins and relationships of surname RASEY and its many variations, especially 3) to determine whether the two major New England progenitors, Joseph RAZEE I and Joseph RASEY I, could be father and son; and 4) to answer the question once and for all as to whether Joseph RASEY truly was a descendant of the MACLEODS of the Isle of Raasay.

Update: Goal 4 has been achieved! Test results of a descendant of Joseph RASEY I show there is no recent connection between him and Clan MACLEOD, over 100 members of which have been tested for the MACLEOD project. Our subject is Haplogroup I1b2a, while the MACLEODs descended from Leod, Chief I, are Haplogroup R1b, so they cannot have shared a common ancestor for tens of thousands of years.

Further Update: Goal 3 has been achieved! A genetic distance of 18 (29/37 or 54/67) indicates there is not a close relationship between progenitors Joseph RAZEE I and Joseph RASEY I of New England, so the former could not have been the father of the latter. That they are the same haplogroup subclade may be coincidental or may indicate they have a common ancestor further back.

Project News:
2006 Feb 1 - the RASEY Y-chromosome DNA Surname Project was opened.
2008 Jul 30 - as of this date, we have three members representing the two major New England progenitors: one is a descendant of the Joseph RASEY who married Mary HOLLON and the other two are descendants of the Joseph RAZEE who married Sarah WHIPPLE and Mercy (WHITE?) DAVIS, with results returned for all three.

Project Results:
Project results may be viewed here, in the table below, or, in more detail, at my web site:

DNA Test Results (Alleles) for Project Members

* Haplogroups in green have been confirmed by SNP testing. Haplogroups in red have been predicted by Family Tree DNA based on unambiguous results in the individual's personal page. This has been placed on this GAP page for your ease and convenience. Please note that for any predicted results we see no reason for ordering a SNP test to confirm the Haplogroup. if a – is in the HAPLO field then we feel that the comparative results are not clear and unambiguous and if the kit holder wants to know their SNP with 100% confidence they may consider ordering a SNP confirmation test.
