Oriel, also known as Orghialla and Airghialla, was an ancient territory within the Ulster area of Ireland, encompassing Cos. Armagh, Louth, Fermanagh, Monaghan, Tyrone, and south Down. The Oriel septs were a loose confederation of clans, whose leaders ruled the area for nearly a thousand years. Traditionally, the Kingdom of Orghialla, also known a Oirghialla and Airghialla, was established in the middle of the 4th century by the three Collas. It lasted until about 1700.
For the purposes of the Oriel Septs Project, we will be using the surnames identified as septs of the Oriel, or identified as being Oriel, or of Oriel, in the works of Dr. Edward MacLysaght, who served as Chief Herald and Genealogical Officer of Arms, Keeper of Manuscripts at the National Library of Ireland, and Chairman of the Manuscripts Commission.
Most of the eligible surnames are Gaelic in origin, but we will also accept the anglicized versions of the listed surnames. We have attempted to list both the Gaelic surname, and its anglicized versions. If you think that an Oriel surname has been omitted, please contact the Group Administrator of this project.
The Y-DNA test results will be posted under the name of the test subject's earliest documented direct paternal ancestor.
If you wish to join our Oriel Project, please use the "Request to Join This Group" link at the top left corner of this page. If you have already been tested at FTDNA, you may join the project at no charge. If you have not been tested, you may use the same link to order a test kit, and the price will reflect our substantial group discount from FTDNA. For the purposes of this project, I personally would suggest the 37 marker Y-DNA test kit.
If you wish to contribute towards the Oriel Septs Project, you may do so by clicking onto the words "Contribute to the Surname Project General Fund," which can be found on the upper left hand side of this page. Please be sure to fill out the form with the name Oriel_Septs as the designated Surname Project to receive the funds. If you wish to earmark those funds for a particular surname within the approved surname list, please contact the Group Administrator. All such contributions will only be used for test kit scholarships.
