Clary of the United States to prove or disprove family traditions and historical notions of the relationships between families bearing variations of the name in many countries.
The name of the project using the spelling Ó Cléirigh was chosen to represent the group from a historical and genealogical perspective as it is the first known spelling in surname form and it hasn't been in use since the 10th century. Although it is no more accurate than other spellings, it does not discriminate against any of the equally valid variations in use even in Ireland today.
If you have a similar name and would like to help with this project and your own genealogical research, please join the project now.
If you would like to know more, visit Ultan's web site at www.clancleary.com for a vast amount of exceptionally detailed information concerning the clan including genealogies, history, current events including clan gatherings and travel suggestions for visiting Ireland and places of interest to the clan. Cheers to Ultan for putting so much time and effort into building and maintaining this site.
Please email Jason S. Clary for questions, suggestions or comments about this project. | Family Tree DNA - Genealogy by Genetics, Ltd. Project Background, Goals, Results and News are copyright of the specific Surname Project Project Goals: Although this project is focused specifically on the 9th Century Irish Prince Cléireach Mac Ceadadhach and his son Maolfabhaill Mac Cléirigh (who's sons were Ó Cléirigh), other groups will be spun off in the event we determine certain families originated in other countries with coincidental similarities in name. It is also quite possible that members of the Clan from Ireland are not directly related to Cleireach and his descendants for various reasons even though they are legitimate members of the clan.
Current mysteries we are attempting to solve:
- How many of us are actually directly descended from Cleireach Mac Ceadadhach?
- Are there any living descendants of the last most senior member of the clan who can claim "Chief of the Name" and register the clan arms with the Chief Herald of Ireland?
- Is the popular theory that Desiree Clary, Queen of Sweden, and certain Clary populations in France were descended from Ó Cléirigh descendants who emigrated to France in the 16th and 17th Century true?
- Are any of the 18th Century and later immigrants to America, Canada and other countries from France related?
- Which, if any, of the Clark/Clarke families around the world are related?
- Are the Milesian Genealogies which trace descendants of the early Irish kings to King Galam "Mil Espania" of Spain (Basque or Galicia) possible or even probable?
- Do individuals in the Hines project descendants of the O'Heynes, a family traced to Cléireach's other son Eidhin, match up with our project and can we get a viable haplotype for Cléireach himself using data from descendants of both of his sons?
- More to come...

| Related Projects:The following FamilyTreeDNA projects should prove useful in our research:
- Hines: The O'Heyne Clan is also descended from Cléireach Mac Ceadadhach
- Clark: Variations of Clark can be English, Scottish or Irish. Some may be Ó Cléirigh.
- MacLaren: The MacLarens are Scottish but MacClary, Clerkin and Clark are known variant and they could easily be represented in Ireland.
- IrelandHeritage: This geographic project should help with the question of the Milesian genealogies among other things.
