Information about the Plymouth Brethern: They were founded by a small group who met togehter in Dublin in 1827-8, the most prominent bmembers being A N Groves and Rev. J N Darby, a curate in Wicklow. They wre opposed to the clericalism of existing churches and believed the day of the Lord was at hand. In 1828 Darby published a tract on the naute and unity of the Church of Christ, and under his leadership a group met for worship in a private house. In 1831 a similar goup was founded at Providence Chapel, Plymouth and from this, the group acquired the title of Plymouth Brethren. Between 1830 and 1838, other groups were founded in many of the principal towns in England, the most important being at Bristol. Brethren considered it necessary to sacrifice, not only luxuries but the normal comforts of life. They protested against worldliness and churchism and were equally opposed to Episcopacy, Presbyterianism and Independecncy. They regarded the world as inherently evil and awaited deliverance from it. Between 1838 and 1845 Darby spread the movement to French Switzerland. After his return, differences developed leading to the fragmentation of the community. No church records were surrendered to the Registration Commissioners, and none are known.

The Story of a Great Recovery by David J. Beattie 1939 by John Ritchie Ltd in Dorset County Library--indexed by name. Extracts from book: There was a Gideon Chaple in that served as the Plymouth Brethren Church in Bristol in April 1832. Soon so great was the interest in this church that the congregation rented Pithay Chapel in the same neighborhood,. Henry Craik and his friend George Muller were the ministers. The German preacher, Muller was not fluent in English and many people came just to hear the young foreigner preach. Before many weeks had passed the attendance at meetings was so great that it was obvious that a larger building would be required. Bethesda Chapel was a spacious building that been built by the Church of England. It was vacant. It was at the top of Great George3 Street. This chaple was rented for one year. Here in July of 1832 Muller and Craik ministered. It is said that these men claimed to be acting under the guideance of the Holy Spirit and acted indepanetly of what was taking place at Plymouth. On 13 August 1832 at the Bethesda Chapel, Mr. Muller, Mr. Craik one other brother and four sisters sat down together, united in church fellowship, without any rules, acting as the spirit directed in taking the sacrament. From that time forward the congregation numbers increased. Crowds flocked to hear the Gospel. In ten years after the opening of this chaple the membership had increased to nearly six hundred. Page 28-29 is an actual account of a member there in 1840. Page 153-4 talks of the Bath movement.

John Oborn autobiography extractions:
He names his father as Joseph Oborn born Sept 18ll at Gillingham, Dorset. He married to Maria Stradling at St. Paul, Bristol. Joseph Oborn and Maria Stradling had one daughter, Eliza, and six sons named Joseph, Fredrick, Henry, Edward, George and John. Joseph Oborn used to belong to the Plymouth Brethren church. Joseph Oborn sold coal and milk in Bath. Sickness prevailed in the family and brothers Joseph, Fredrick, Edward and George died young and were buried in Walcot Chapel burial ground. Mormon elder, Thomas Smith, came to Bath and preached the gospel in 1842. Joseph Oborn was baptized. Joseph Oborn died 29 Oct 1856 near Greenriver, Wyoming at age of 45 years, one month 3 days. Maria Stradling was born at Rockwell Green, Wellington, Somerset. She worked in a factory in her younger years. She married to Thomas Walker in 1857. Brother in law, and spouse of Eliza Oborn, Benjamin Suter returned to England. In the Salt Lake Temple John had Benjamin Suter's baptism, endowment and sealing to spouse done. He had children: Frederick, Joseph, Caroline, Eliza and Maria. About his brother Henry Oborn, John Oborn tells:

1. that Henry was born at Bath.
2. Henry remained at home until the year 1854
3. then being possessed of a romantic mind entlisted in the 13th regiment of Infantry of Bristol service.
4. Joseph Oborn bought Henry out of his military obligation and in three or four months later he enlisted again in the Royal Artillery, where he remained until about six months after his father and mother emigrated to Utah, when from ill health he was discharged. While in the army he was sent to Crimea War between Russia, England, France and Turkey. He was in one skirmish and then sent back to England where he remained.

5. John Oborns autobiography states that his brother Henry died of a "broken heart" shortly after their emigration to Utah. But when he had Henry Oborn's temple endowment work done in 1898, he stated that Henry died about 1892. And, when Maria Stradling had her children sealed to her in 1898, she listed Henry as dieing about 1892 also. There was a Henry Oborn who died in 1856 in Somerset, but we have proven that this Henry Oborn was not John Oborn's brother. (details later) Another death entry in 1891 is more likely John Oborn's brother. The 1856 Somerset Death Certificate: Henry Oborne male (no age given) died 29 May 1856 at Keinton Mandevelle of sudden death natural causes. Reg. District Landport, Somerset. This is the Henry Oborn that is found on the 1851 census of Keinton Mandeville, Somerset, born in Westbury, Wiltshire, son of Stephen and Jane Oborn. The certificate we accept as ancestral is the following: Henry Oborn alias Hobson died 25 Jan 1891 Gloucester Lunatic Asylum, Wooton (Within) USD male age 55 general laborer of Bath. Reg dist. Kingsholm, Glouc. John Oborns brother, Henry was found alive in the 1861 census of Bath. He was age 23 born in Bath and was living in a Lyncombe/Widcombe institution. We find the following records concerning this Henry Oborn:

Items searched for Henry Oborn, brother of our John Oborn:

"Henry Oborn being asked whether he has any claim on the regiment for arrears of pay, allowances or clothing answered that he has received all just demands." Signed Hy Oborn. 9 Bat. Royal Artillery.
7. His physical description is given as age 20 and 11/12 years. 5' 6" tall. Grey eyes, brown hair, fresh complexion.
8. The medical report states that Henry was discharged for disease of the lungs and that for the last 18 months he has suffered from chronic cough expectation and shortness of breath with extreme debility and increasing emaciation, presenting all the appearance of a very consumptive patient. It was the doctors opinion that Henry Oborn was unfit for service and would be so permanently. He was disqualified for military duty, but was listed as able to earn his own livelyhood after the military.

Starting with Henry Oborn's death certificate in 1891 where it listed him as a ward of the Gloucester Lunatic asylum, our researcher did some checking in the Gloucester Asylum registers and found the following:

1. In the Gloucester Lunatic Asylum we found that Henry Oborn alias Hobson has been in an Asylum since 18 September 1863, and was admitted into the Gloucester Asylum as a pauper patient on
the 19 May 1890. It is signed by the Relieving Officer of Battersea Parish, Surrey, now part of London, and by the Chaplain of Wandsworth and Clapham (poor law) Union on a form provided by the County of Somerset and City of Bath. It would ordinarily be directed to the Superintendent of the Asylum for the County of Somerset, but that is crossed out and "to the superintendent of Hoxton House" is substituted. Hoxton House was a private lunatic asylum located at 2122 Hoxton Old Town, Hackney, London. Henry had been chargeable to the "common fund" in Battersea parish. Glousecter Lunatic Asylum records state that he admitted to the Gloucester Lunatic Asylum as patient number 94552, and that he died on 25 Jan 1891 at age 55 of Pneumonia. It stated that his name was Henry Oborn alias Hobson. His registration number was 9385.

2. From the Medical certificate we learn that the doctor examined him and said that he was "suiffering from dementia. He hardly ever speaks and answers (when he does) in almost inaudible whispers. He cannot attend to his own personal wants nor employ himself in any way. He is inadequately nourished, muscles flabby. He heart and lungs were normal but weak. He had an old fracture of the right ulva and right infrucial hernia. The medical certificate shows that Henry Oborn had been a resident of the Wandsworth and Clapham Workhouse.

3. With the papers concerning Henry Oborn at the Gloucester Asylum was a form that stated that Henry Oborn had once been chargeable to the Wandsworth and Clapham Poor Law Union and that he was in the County Lunatic Asylum at Surrey, but that he should be removed to the Somerset County Lunatic Asylum at Wells, Somerset. The Wells Asylum was opened as the Somerset County Asylum for pauper lunatics in 1848, and served Somerset and Bath until 1897. The date of the transfer request from the County Lunatic Asylum at Surrey to the Somerset Lunatic Asylum at Wells was 16 Jan 1866. The reason for requesting a transter was given as their was no room in the County Asylum at Surrey. Date of admittance to Wells Asylum was 20 Jan 1866. Henry was listed as age 27 and single. Form of disorder was mania. His previous history was given as parents dead, youngest of 2 children, one male and l female. Disposition and temper good, habits: industrious, can read and write, labourer, transfered from Surrey County Asylum Wandsworth, chargeable to Bath. General health good, pulse 100, tongue clean, skin cool, appetite good, expression natural, conduct quiet, conversation incoherent, ideas wandering, memory good, propensities to wander, affections natural, came quietly on the journey. Their records show that he did the following things at the asylum in Wells:

1. 1869 he worked outdoors, had good health, appears depressed, mentally not improved.
2. Broke his arm by a stone falling in the quarry. Will not keep bandages and splints on or plaster of paris. Arm is sound but united badly.
3. 1881 In good health and able to work, mind the same, carries coal, mentally weak.
4. Last entry is on 25 Apr 1882.

The 1871 census of Wells lists Henry Oborn as age 32, unmarried laborer, birthplace unknown. The 1881 census of same lists him as unmarried age 42 born Bath, a laborer.

On 18 Sept 1863 in the County Lunatic Asylum at Surrey, he was listed as age 27, a labourer, single, member of the Church of England, and chargeable to the common fund at Battersea. No nearest of kin is known. He was going by Henry Hobson. He was listed as a person of unsound mind, incoherent rambling and unconnected in conversation. He supposes that he is possessed of a large sum of money, which amount to a half penny with which he says he is about to purchase a railway return ticket. He was found by the police wandering about the road. He is in a state of restlessness, walking about his ward at night, beating the table with his hands, humming and snapping his fingers. They knew that his name was Henry Oborn. Henry Oborn was transferred to the Somerset Asylum on 20 Jan 1866, having been in the Surrey Asylum since 22 Mar 1864. However another paper, written on March 22 1864 states that as of 7 Nov 1865 Henry Oborn had been chargeable to the Bath poor law union rather than the Wandsworth and Clapham poor law union, but that he was discharged from the Surrey Asylum on 20 Jan 1866. It also stated that previous to being in the Surrey Asylum he had been in the Hoxton House. It states that on March 22 1864 he was age 27. The Surrey County Lunatic Asylum still exists and is now known as Springfield Hospital at 61 Glenburnie Rd., London SW17 7DJ. The papers show that Henry Oborn had been committed by legal order of the Justice of the Peace to the Surrey Assylum. He was discharged as "condition unimproved" to the Somerset Asylum.

You had a Settlement if your parents had a Settlement, or if you had worked there for a number of years or owned or rented land of a certain value, usually 10 pounds. If you wanted to live in antoehr parish you would only be accepted there if you had a certificate from the Overseers of your own parish saying that they would reimburse the Overseers of the other parish for any money they had to spend on you. So in 1756 the Overseers of the parish of Gillingham were accepting that George Woburne had been a member of their parish. You will see later on that they were also accepting responsibility for his sons and their families as they took their father's Settlement.)
1757--George Woburne's widow now paid on a regular basis per month so she is perhaps back in Gillingham. Also paid expenses of John Woburn's family in time of the smallpox at Wincanton. Gave money to George Woburnes's family.(must be a son of the previous George Oborn who was deceased). Gave money to John Woburne's family at Wincanton. Gave money for keeping Oborne's family at Wincanton for two months. Paid OS of Wincanton what he gave them in 6 weeks.
1758--Paid Dr. Perfect his bill on account of John Oborne's family at Wincanton.

note from our researcher, Daphne Hill, concerning the 18ll entry of Joseph Chaple, the illegitimate son of Ann Oborn in June of 18ll: "The census was taken at the beginning of April 1851, so if Joseph was really born in September of 18ll, his age would be listed as age 39, not 40 in the 1851 census. This would make the earlier baptism of Joseph Chaple Oborn more likely."

This is interesting when considered that Joseph Oborn, son of our Joseph Oborn was baptized 7 Aug 1831 was listed as of Milk Street also. Either there is a Milk Street in both Bath and Bristol, or else both these persons lived on Milk street.

note from researcher, Daphne Hill: I looked in the Dorset 1851 census index. There were no Joseph Oborn or Isaac Oborn entries. There were no Joseph Chaple entries, nor any Chaple entries who were old enough to be Joseph Oborn's father. Most Chapels that are listed were born in Devon. The Oborn name is quite common in Shaftesbury Holy Trinity. I looked at the bishops transcripts for Shaftesbury Holy Trinity and St. Peters from 1700 onward for baptisms. There was only parents Robert and Maria Oborn having children at the time Joseph Oborn was born. Robert and Maria Stradling did not have a son John or a son Isaac. Maria Oborn, a widow by 1851 was still in the census with her sons John and William.

Larue Cox, an Oborn descendant wrote:
Oborne is a compound of old English wores--"Woh" means Crooked or twisting. "Burn" means stream. She took this from a book by Anton entitled, "Place Names of Dorset". Oborne is a parish in Dorset. The book states that the place name of Oborne was spelled many different ways between 975 AD to 1535 AD: Woburnah, Woeburne, Woburnam, Wouburn, Woborne, Obourne. She states that she herself found the Oborn name spelled as Albourn on one of Eliza Oborn Suter's children's birth certificate, and that Joseph Oborn himself was the person who registered the child. This needs to be checked out.
