About us

This Y-DNA database allows Morphew and Murphy researchers to check Morphew ties.  Morphew is English, not Irish. The w in Morphew occasionally falls silent leading to the spelling of Murphy, sometimes permanent. The principle colonial Morphew family in America was J. Morphew (~1725 - <1783) + Mary Burk (~1732 - >1802).  This immigrant is now thought to be James Morphew (ca1720 to 1778/83) who married Mary Burk in 1749 Augusta County, Virginia.  They moved to Guilford County, N.C. by 1754.  Other Morphews immigrated to America, but did not retain the spelling and their y-dna results haven't been identified.  New Zealand and Australian Morphews (various spellings) need to have their y-dna tested.

If your y-dna result seems close to Morphew y-dna, please do contact me so that questions and information can be exchanged.  I am "Jim Murphy" at n8sml@hotmail.com.   Privacy issue prevents me from contacting you.  Keep in mind, most Murphys in America are Irish Murphys and so far their y-dna results are not similar to English Morphews - not even close.   Irish Murphys who are posted to the Morphew website would better be served on the Murphy surname project.
