Background

McComb is one of the septs of Clan MacThomas. The McCombs surname is a variant spelling of McComb. Both names are found among North American Scottish and Scotch-Irish immigrants and in former British colonies worldwide.

The McCombs-McComb Surname Project is a male lineage group open to individuals with the surnames McCombs, McComb, or any reasonable spelling variation. In this project we hope to combine Y-DNA testing with conventional genealogy to expand our understanding of our McComb(s) roots.

Since surnames are passed down from father to son like the Y-chromosome, the results compared in a Surname Project are those of males taking a Y-DNA test. Females do not carry their father's Y-DNA therefore the tested individual must be a male. Women who would like to check their direct paternal line (father’s father’s father and so on) may participate by having a male relative with this surname take a Y-DNA test as the representative of their family line.

It should be noted that if you order your test kit through a FTDNA project, you will receive a discounted price. For the names in this project, it is recommended that at least 37 markers be tested.
