Project Background

Calling all Lifshitz families!

Please join us in an exciting new initiative to attempt to identify connections between Lifshitz families from all over the world!

Using DNA, we now have the opportunity to go beyond our genealogical paper-trail brickwalls and discover whether different Lifshitz families are genetically related to each other. All that's required is a simple, painless cheek swab from a male Lifshitz in your family, and the scientists at Family Tree DNA will do the rest!

Participation Requirements:

Please carefully read the following requirements for participation in the Lifshitz DNA Project. These requirements are quite easy to comply with, and they will ensure the most successful project possible.

  1. Participants must be male with the Lifshitz surname (or an appropriate variation or change from an original Lifshitz surname). Females do not have a Y chromosome, which is required for this type of DNA project. Researchers who do not qualify to take the DNA test themselves are strongly encouraged to recruit a male Lifshitz from their family to participate in this project.

  2. We strongly recommend testing 37 markers for the best results of this project.

  3. Please be prepared to complete the following requirements after you receive your DNA results:

    • Specify your earliest known patrilineal and/or matrilineal ancestor(s) and the town they were from under the Setup Preferences tab of your myFTDNA webpage.

    • Follow the instructions on your Setup Preferences page to specify the town of origin by latitute/longitude. This will mark your town on the member distribution map below.

    • Upload a GEDCOM showing your qualifying patrilineal and/or matrilineal ancestry to your myFTDNA webpage.

How to Join:

EXISTING FAMILY TREE DNA CUSTOMERS

Log in to your personal myFTDNA webpage. Click the blue JOIN button at the top of the page. Scroll to the Surname Projects category and click the L link. Then click the "Lifshitz" link and follow the instructions to submit a join request.

EXISTING GENOGRAPHIC PROJECT PARTICIPANTS

If you have participated in the Genographic Project, but have not transferred your DNA results to Family Tree DNA yet, you must do so before you can join the Lifshitz DNA Project. Log in to your personal Genographic Project page and at the very bottom of your results page, you'll find a link to transfer your DNA results to Family Tree DNA. Follow the instructions and once your results have been transferred, continue by following the instructions above for existing Family Tree DNA customers.

ALL OTHERS

If you have never purchased a Family Tree DNA or Genographic Project test kit and don't already have a Family Tree DNA or Genographic Project account, please use the link below to purchase your DNA kit and join the Lifshitz DNA Project. Please remember, only male Lifshitz family members can be tested for the purpose of this project!

FTDNA has offered us the following discounted group rates for this project:

Y-DNA 12 Markers: $ 99
Y-DNA 25 Markers: $124
Y-DNA 37 Markers: $149 Recommended!
Y-DNA 67 Markers: $239

Tests may be upgraded at a later date, after the initial test is complete. Special upgrade pricing will apply.

How Many Markers? The more markers you test, the more refined your results will be. If you match a person with a different surname as you at only 12 markers, there's no guarantee that you are related to that person or the connection may be thousands of years ago, before reasonable genealogical timeframes. However, a match at 37 markers or more generally indicates a relationship within the past few hundred years.
