SNP - Single Nucleotide Polymorphism
Changes in the DNA that happen when a single nucleotide (A, T, G, or
C) in the genome sequence is altered. A person has many SNP's that together create a unique DNA pattern for that individual.

STR - Short Tandem Repeats
Known also as microstellite an STR is a short DNA motif (pattern) repeated in tandem. ATGC repeated eleven times would give the marker a value of 11.

Non-technical:

Your STR test is your Y-chromosome 12, 25, 37 marker test. It is the test that you use to compare to other males of your surname to discover your genetic relationships.

The SNP (pronounced "snip") is performed at another section of your Y-chromosome and will tell you what your deep ancestral origins are.

Further testing is done to confirm Haplogroups but lab may have given you a prediction.
