Background

Welcome to the Worldwide Kirkman DNA Project. The Project was set up in September 2008, and we have already made many exciting new discoveries!

This Project welcomes both male and female KIRKMAN, KIRMAN & KERMAN (and all other variants) surname researchers. It includes all the various DNA tests, including the new Family Finder test to identify cousins of both sexes, Y-DNA tests for straight paternal lines, and mtDNA for straight maternal lines. Anyone can do the Family Finder test. Only a male can take the Y-DNA test for his paternal line. Both a male and a female can test for their mother's maternal mtDNA.

The DNA Project is run in conjunction with the KIRKMAN one-name study, which is registered with the Guild of One-Name Studies in London. Further information on our one-name study can be found on the Kirkman profile page. Visit our family website The Kirkman Worldwide Family for lots more about our origins, history, branches and stories about Notable Kirkmans, as well as several databases.
Participating is an opportunity to uncover information not provided in the paper records, which will help with your research of your family tree. We presently have project members from four different countries: Australia, England, South Africa, USA & Canada. They fit into seven different lines. For more on what has been achieved, see the results page. As the project progresses, the results for the lines will provide information on the evolution of the surname.
The Y-DNA test tells you about your direct male line, which would be your father, his father, and back in time. You must be male to take this test, and you should have one of the surnames shown. If you believe there is a Kirkman or variant in your direct male line, although you have a different surname, you are also welcome to participate. If you are female, you will need to find a direct line male in your family tree to participate and represent your tree. We encourage males who order a Y-DNA test to order 37 markers, if possible. If you order less markers, you can upgrade later, though this costs a little more.
Both males and females may also be interested in learning about their direct female line, which would be their mother, their mother's mother, and back in time. Both men and women inherit mtDNA, although only women pass it on. You would order a mtDNA test. For matches in a genealogical time frame, order the mtDNA Plus test.
Both the Y-DNA and the mtDNA test results contain no personal information, and the tests are quite different from those used by forensic scientists in criminal investigations and by doctors to identify paternity. We encourage you to Join the KIRKMAN DNA Project now!!
