Project Background:

Sometime in the 16th century a Welshman named "Kendrick (Cynwrig in Welsh), son of David, son of Edward, etc." took his son, Hugh, to be baptised. When Hugh grew up he changed his name from "Hugh, son of Kendrick, son of David, etc." to "Hugh Kendrick", in the English manner. This change is recorded in a pedigree roll held at the Glamorgan Record Office in Cardiff, Wales (CL/Ped 17). Hugh's son, John Kendrick, became Lord Mayor of London in 1651.

This adoption of a surname occurred relatively recently in many Welsh families, with the result that families with Welsh origins will often have adopted the same surname (a popular personal name perhaps) without having a recent common male ancestor. Conversely, first cousins who adopted surnames based on their fathers' names would end up with different surnames.

Y-DNA analysis offers a means of establishing which Kendrick families do have recent common ancestors, and which other families may be close relatives.

Project Goals:

1) Establish genetic relationships between families with the surname Kendrick or one of its many variants. Group families on the basis of their Y-DNA characteristics.

2) Identify families with other surnames who might have close genetic links to ours.

3) Explore the "deep" ancestral history of Kendrick families:- e.g. are they of Celtic or Nordic origin?

This is a project for which new members are urgently required.

We look forward to receiving our eighth Y-DNA result in a few weeks.

Project Results:

The initial results show just how different the Y-chromosome DNA of Kendrick families can be. Some are of haplogroup R1b, as in #3 and #5, #6, & #7, two (#1 & #2)are of haplogroup I1a, and one (#4) is predicted as E3b - which is usually associated with Mediterranean populations.

#1 & #2 are very similar and confirm that the two are distant cousins. This result was not expected, but has since been confirmed.

#6 & #7 were also thought to be cousins, but the differences between their Y-DNA is somewhat greater than expected. This is "work in progress". as is the relationship of #5 to #6 & #7 - an unexpected result.
