Haplogroup A; Haplogroup A1, A2, A3, A4, etc. are branches of Haplogroup A. By definition, branches of a haplogroup are younger than the parent haplogroup, so haplogroup A began before A1. People in haplogroup A can be found both in Asia and in Native American populations, but some of its branches are more specifically found in some populations rather than others. We can identify whether someone belongs to haplogroup A with the basic mtDNA testing. With the full sequence, we can determine what branch of A (based on what has been discovered so far through research) a person belongs to.
You can order upgrades from HVR1 to HVR2 order your test directly from your FTDNA personal page. Once you have logged in, click on Order Tests and upgrades. The Standard Orders link will take you to the necessary order form. The test needed is called the mtDNA refinement for $75. The same samples previously provided will be used to run the additional testing.
