Background

About the Project. The Ely Carroll project is for people descended from the Ely Carroll clan, which also goes by the names Éile and Clan Cian. Descendants have a variety of surnames in addition to Carroll.

You are urged to join your surname project at FTDNA in addition to this clan project. And, let your surname project administrator know about your Ely Carroll DNA.

You also are urged to join the L21 and DF21 projects at FTDNA. See below under "Ely Carroll DNA."

About Ely Carroll. The Ely Carrolls come from counties Offaly and Tipperary in Ireland. There are three famous decendants:

Ely Carroll DNA. The Ely Carroll descendants have a value of 11 for the 66th marker, DYS 492. All who have done deep clade testing have the L21 SNP and Y-chromosome DNA in the R1b1a2a1a1b4 haplogroup. If you have done the deep clade testing, you are urged to join the L21 project at FTDNA.

All Ely Carroll descendants are expected to have the DF21 SNP, which is downstream of L21. Other groups, including Clan Colla and the Little Scottish Cluster, also have the DF21 SNP. DF21 may represent 10 percent of L21 SNP. The DF21 SNP is estimated to be 3,000 years old, compared with 4,000 for the L21 SNP.

You are urged to order the DF21 SNP test. It is not yet part of deep clade testing. To order the DF21 test, go to ORDER ADVANCED TESTS  (not ORDER ADVANCED SNP TESTS nor ORDER DEEP CLADE TEST). The cost is $29. You also are urged to join the DF21 project at FTDNA as well as the L21 project.

There are several SNPs downstream of DF21: P314.2, Z246 (DF25 and DF5), L720, and S190. As of May 22, 2012, none of these SNPs is positive for Ely Carroll. You are urged to order tests for these downstream SNPs by going to ORDER ADVANCED TESTS. No test is yet available at FTDNA for S190. For more details, see Results.

Modal DNA. The modal DNA for Ely Carroll can be found at Ysearch: TG7S3. The genetic distances of project members can be found under Results.

Historic Names. The modal was developed from 32 people with eight historic Ely Carroll surnames who have tested 67 markers:

  • 12 Carroll, including one who traces his ancestry back to the Ely Carrolls through Charles Carroll of Carrollton (includes a Linville who was probably a Carroll)

  • 4 Dooley (excludes a Lee, who may be a variant of Dooley)

  • 8 Bowe/Bohan

  • 2 Meagher

  • 2 Kelly/Kealy

  • 2 Tracey

  • 1 Flanagan

  • 1 O'Keefe

Other historic Ely Carroll surnames for which DNA has not yet been found are: Corcoran, Healy, Nevin, O'Connor. O'Hara.

Sources of historic names:

Non-historic Names. Non-historic surnames that match up: 6 Springer, 5 Purcell, 2 Martin, and other single names, including Arvela, Butler, Crow, Cuadras, Cullen, Davidson, Dillon, Duke, Garvey, Hunter, Kuroinen, Leahy, Lee, Mahan, McKenzie, Mitchell, Murphy, Prendergast, Rose, Whalen.

Database. As of March 21, 2012, a total of 67 people have been found to have Ely Carroll DNA, 38 of whom have joined this project.

Multiple Origins of Carrolls. The Carrolls of Ely Carroll are 18% of all Carrolls. A study of 66 Carrolls who have tested 67 markers in the Carroll amnd McCarville DNA projects at FTDNA indicated that they were distributed by sept as follows:

  • Ely Carroll 10 (18%)

  • Clan Colla 13 (23%)

  • Northwest Irish 10 (18%)

  • Ryan/Leary/Carroll 4 (7%)

  • South Irish 2 (4%)

  • Isles I2b1a 1 (2%)

Ely Carroll Yahoo Group. Martha Bowes, Peter Carroll, and Peter Biggins have a web page for Ely Carroll at Yahoo Groups with messages, files, and links relating to Ely Carroll. The purpose of the group is to learn about Ely Carroll from material submitted by group members and ask questions of group members. You can send messages to the group, respond to messages submitted by others, add Internet links and files relating to Ely Carroll, and learn from links and files submitted by others.

Map. Locations important to descendants of Ely Carroll are shown on this Ely Carroll Map. Tyrone Bowes, a member of our project, provides maps of Ireland at Irish Origenes.
