Project Surnames:Project Background: | For over one hundred years researchers have sought to prove/disprove claims made about relationships down the line from and among the 18th century Virginia Daltons. Because most of the Virginia Dalton lines appeared or are known to be in Albemarle County about 1740, people in the past have assumed that all of the Daltons there, at that time, were sons of the eldest man. The eldest man at that time was Timothy Dalton Sr. Yet nothing in the records points to Timothy as the "father of them all." Most of the Albemarle Daltons migrated southward in Virginia, some by 1750 and others by 1770. Then we have David Dalton who, during the Revolutionary War, took his family to Rutherford Co. NC-- from Albemarle Co. All David's sons were born in Albemarle Co. according to their Rev. War pension records. NO ONE recognizes a relationship of David to the other Daltons in Albemarle, but family naming patterns are so similar that the likelihood is possible that David was somebody's brother up there in Albemarle. And the assertions mount: We may find that our line may be quite different in respect to progenitor, different from all the claims presently made. But, there have already been some amazing findings for some folks outside the main purpose of the project. | Family Tree DNA - Genealogy by Genetics, Ltd. The purpose of the project is to prove/disprove claims made about relationships down the line from and among the 18th c. Virginia Daltons: which is what most researchers have been trying to prove for well over one hundred years.
2. Find out the lineage of our Dalton lines back to "the old country." Did we all come from one country in Europe or were there several early families that migrated to the American colonies? | Family Tree DNA - Genealogy by Genetics, Ltd. If you would like to know who the participants are and where their earliest known ancestor lived, then join us. We openly share all information with Project participants.
2. FTDNA now offers a 37 marker test. They didn't have that when we started this project. Some of the participants have ordered upgrades and most of the new participants are ordering this test. I get nothing for saying this, but if you don't order the 37 marker test, then you'll regret it. This test is going to give us higher resolution in working out family lines and greater confidence in the relatedness of lines. | Family Tree DNA - Genealogy by Genetics, Ltd. Project Background, Goals, Results and News are copyright of the specific Surname Project Project Results: | The results to date have been interesting. Seven of the sixteen men who have received their results are perfect matches. Three more men match at twenty-four of the twenty-five genetic locations tested. It is likely these men have a common American ancestor. There are two other men who are a perfect match with each other, but not with the larger group. Then there are four men who are not a close match with anyone else and three men who are in the process of submitting specimens. | Family Tree DNA - Genealogy by Genetics, Ltd.
