Project Background: The Melungeon DHA Project is a study of males and females who have proven known Melungeon ancestors, according to old records, and agreed on by some of the top serious Melungeon reseachers. The participants must descend in a Genealogical useful line; i.e., father to son to son, etc. for the Y chromosome testing and Mother to daughter to daughter, etc. for the mtDNA testing. The DNA results, combined with extensive genealogy research, hopefully will open some new windows for research on the Melungeon people.
Everyone joining must present genealogy in a reasonable time.
There will be two groups
Group 1: Core Melungeon
Group 2: Melungeon related
Bunch, Goins, Gibson, Minor, Collins, Williams, Goodman, Denham, Bolin, Mullins, Moore, Shumake, Boltons, Perkins, Mornings, Menleys, Breedlove, Hopkins, Mallett, with various spellings of these names. More names may be added as this is an ongoing research project and these names will be in Group 1. If these names are in your family but are not in a direct line that follows Y DNA or mtDNA testing you will be in Group 2.
Prior approval by the administrator is required for becoming a participant in this project.

Joining the Melungeon DNA Project if you have already been tested at Family Tree DNA:
This is very easy to do. Your results will appear in both places. You will belong to two projects. FTDNA did this because many requested that they be allowed to join Geographical or Ethnic Projects as their second choice. There is a button on your personal page to click on to do this. Request Melungeon DNA Project if this is your choice. There is no charge for this service. You will have to be approved by the administrator. |
Project Goals: To establish modal DNA results for the Core Melungeon lines of Goins, Gibson, Minor, Bunch, Bolin, Bolling, Collins, Williams, Goodman, Denham, Bolin, Mullins, Moore, Shumake, Boltons, Perkins, Mornings, Menleys, Breedlove, Hopkins, Mallett and to also include families with these names in their lines.
General Fund Scholarships
The General Fund is a type of scholarship/grant program administered by Family Tree DNA where individuals may make a contribution to a specified DNA project.
A great way to:
- honor your ancestors!
- remember your family genealogist!
- dedicate to a beloved living/or deceased family member!
- or just plain help the Melungeon DNA Project!
You may choose to designate a specific line to be tested or leave that decision up to the discretion of the administrator. Either way, your contribution will be deeply appreciated.

DNA Test Results (Alleles) for Project Members * Haplogroups in green have been
confirmed by SNP testing. Haplogroups in red have
been predicted by Family Tree DNA based on unambiguous results in the
individual's personal page. This has been placed on this GAP page for your ease
and convenience. Please note that for any predicted results we see no reason for
ordering a SNP test to confirm the Haplogroup. if a – is in the HAPLO field then
we feel that the comparative results are not clear and unambiguous and if the
kit holder wants to know their SNP with 100% confidence they may consider
ordering a SNP confirmation test.
