Project Background

The purpose of this project is to aid genealogists researching the surname CORBIN and its variants through the use of Y-chromosome DNA testing. All CORBIN/etc. males are welcome to join the project. As only males have a Y-chromosome, only males can be tested. If you are female, you can have a male relative submit a sample on behalf of your line. For further information, please see the project web page at my genealogy web site:

CORBIN Y-chromosome DNA Surname Project: Home Page

To participate meaningfully, testees will need to share their direct male line ancestry back to the earliest known CORBIN, either in the form of a pedigree chart or, preferable, family group sheets (excluding living persons). This is a requirement, not an option, for participation in the project because DNA test results, without lineages, are useless.

One CORBIN line turns out to have an NPE, a "Non-Paternal Event" (i.e., a hidden adoption or illicit paternity), in his patrilineal line. He is, in fact, a genetic descendant of Henry SHERMAN (c1512-c1590) of Dedham, Essex, England, several of whose descendants emigrated to New England in the 17th Century. If you are a male SHERMAN descended from Henry on a patrilineal line and you have an STR test result of DYS 446 = 14, please contact the project admin (address above). Our CORBIN has this value, which is non-modal for the family, so you may be able to help us deduce which Massachusetts SHERMAN is his ancestor.
