Project Background:

Welcome to the Clan MacLean / MacLaine Y-DNA Project. The project is an effort to learn more about the origins of the clan and it’s various branches. The project is open to all male MacLeans / MacLaines and all spelling variations world-wide.

The family’s ancestral home is on the Isle of Mull in the Inner Hebrides but members ended up in all parts of the world.

Additionally all males bearing surnames of recognized septs of the clan are encouraged to join as well.

Project Results:

If there is one thing that is obvious from the results thus far, it is that we are not all descended from a common male ancestor. It is likely that some families connected to the clan may have changed their names. Others may have claimed membership in the clan through a female ancestor and therefore would have the Y-DNA of their male ancestors.
