Project Background:

A DNA search of your Cameron ancestry can provide the link or proof you need to establish your earliest common ancestor with another Cameron. The study works best when you and another of our surname have already established this possibility. Without a suspected link, it will likely take a bit longer for you to get the results you hope to find. Eventually, you should find the connection you seek.

NOTE: THIS IS A Y-CHROMOSOME STUDY OF THOSE WITH THE SURNAME CAMERON, AND WILL NOT PRODUCE RESULTS FOR FEMALE CAMERONS, WHERE A DIFFERENT TEST WOULD BE INVOLVED.

It is to every participant's advantage to help others learn of this DNA study. It literally can prove the more-the-merrier concept, given enough test results.

We have researched different DNA study sources and believe Family Tree DNA to be the best company available.

The Clan Cameron Association of North America is coordinating the Cameron DNA study. Regardless of where participants might reside, they are encouraged to join the study. It is hoped that Camerons from a variety of countries might find a genealogical connection with one another.

Project Goals:

This project is intended to research only the MALE surname Cameron and not necessarily the many sept names of Cameron (such as Taylor, Martin, Clark and Clarke, etc.) However, we sincerely welcome and invite those of the numerous Cameron septs to join in the Project.

It will be your future responsibility as a participant to keep Family Tree DNA and your Administrator advised of any change in your contact information, such as home address and e-mail so we may reach you as needed.

Project News:

In the beginning, we were able to post the participants test results on the Cameron website, however, as the number of participants has grown, this is no longer possible. We invite someone with the interest and ability to set up a general posting site for the project to contact us and indicate an ability and willingness to, again, make this available.

The thing that could make the project more complete and meaningful for all is if participants could have their results posted on the Cameron website -- not by name, unless you might chose to make your name known -- but by the Kit Number, issued when you sign up with FamilyTree DNA. Even if you sign the release form you receive with your test, your name will never be released unless you so specify. Your search for your earliest ancestor will be enhanced by your communication with others sharing the same markers as your.

We hope to gather as much information about each participant as possible. It is not required that you disclose information about living members of your line, or at least in a way that might constitute an invasion of privacy. We encourage you to provide the following information to cercamb@charter.net and, most important, to post a GEDCOM once your test results are returned.
1. Participant FTDNA number (not necessary for GEDCOM)
2. Paternal Line (w/spouse(s) names)
3. Family Notes (area where ancestors were from, noted Cameron families, etc.)
4. Significance, Relationship (we would determine this, based on results)

Project Results:

Initially, DNA results will be published on this site, but they may eventual be made available on the Clan Cameron Online (www.clan-cameron.org/dna) -- see Project News (above).
