UPDATED -03/16/09
We now have several distinct Y-DNA groups within the Project:
GROUP I – Sara Boyte(Boyett) and John Ballard (Kits #1-3: Haplogroup R1b1)
Thomas Boyt (Boyte, Boyet, Boyett) born ca 1690 in Nansemond County, VA (son of Thomas born ca 1665), married Elizabeth:
• Sarah (b ca 1730) = John Ballard
o JOSEPH BALLARD BOYTE (BOYETT) b ca 1759 in Dobbs Co., NC
o JACOB BALLARD BOYTE (BOYETT) b 1755 in Dobbs Co., NC
The Boyett(e) DNA Projected has demonstrated that the ancestors of the following project members descend from Sarah and John:
Kit 25104: George Boyett (b 1864 GA) >John Doy Boyett (b 1907 AR)
Kit 33804: John B. Boyett (b 1793 NC) > Isaac Right Boyett (b 1831) >Austin Warren Boyett (b 1852 GA)
Kit 62193: Jacob Ballard Boyte (b 1759 NC) > Joseph Wesley Boyt (b ca 1780) Malcolm McPherson Boyte (b 1837)
Sarah, a grand-daughter of Thomas Boy(e)t (b 1665), had 2 sons by John Ballard - Joseph Ballard Boyte (Boyett) and Jacob Ballard Boyte (Boyett). Though these sons took the Boyett name, they are descendants of Thomas Boy(e)t in the female line, and carry the Y-DNA of their father, John Ballard. Thus any descendants from this line would be expected NOT to share the Y-DNA signature of Thomas Boy(e)t. Links of this Group to John Ballard/Sarah Boyett have been confirmed by a recent match with a member of the Ballard DNA Project.
The results for this group belong to haplogroup R1b1 with a 12 marker genetic signature of:
13 23 14 11 10 14 12 12 12 13 13 29
And for 25 markers:
13 23 14 11 10 14 12 12 12 13 13 29 17 9 10 11 11 24 15 19 28 15 16 16 18
A sample from Boyett Group 1 was tested in England for additional sub-clade SNP's. The results are R1b1c9 S21+ which appears to be early Briton Anglo/Saxon
abt. 300-400 AD (prior, during and after the Romans). This SNP is found mainly in the Nordic and Jastorf culture areas along the North Sea.
GROUP II - The Sons of Thomas Boyt/Boyet/Boyett (b ca 1665) (Kits #4-38: Haplogroup F)
Thomas Boyt (Boyte, Boyet, Boyett) of Nansemond Co., VA, born ca 1665, married Rebecca:
• THOMAS (b ca 1690)
• WILLIAM (b ca 1700)
• EDWARD (b 1715)
• GEORGE (b 1715)
The Boyett(e) DNA Project has demonstrated that the ancestors of the following project members descend from the sons of Thomas and Rebecca:

With kit 27860 - (William Boyett, b 1761 England), we established a genetic link between Boyett(e)s in the UK with those in the US. This line appears in the records of Dorset (England) beginning in the 1500s & 1600s, and is believed to be of possible French origin. The family of this project member landed at Chichester in Sussex (England) in the early 1700s from Rouen, France, and the Boyetts in Rouen are believed to be linked with Boyetts in the Alsace-Lorraine region of France.
Kit 33047 – Richard Boyt> William Boyt (b 1764, Dorset, England)>William Boyt (b 1791 Dorset, England). This lineage is from a project member in Wales with links to the Somerset and Dorset regions of Southwest England. Though the exact period of the arrival of the first Boyetts in the UK has still not conclusively been proven as variants of the Boyett surname (including Boyatt, Boyet, and Boyt) appear in records throughout various periods of British history. In any case, it is now clear that the original Boyett(e) male immigrant to America was closely related to these UK families.
This Group appears to consist primarily of direct male line descendants of Thomas Boy(e)t (b 1665) with the following reconstructed 12-marker genetic signature:
14 22 14 10 12 13 11 13 13 13 11 30
Kits 69045, 67488, 45559, 40348, 33407, 30164, 25086, 30389, 30548, 25431, 26248, 26373, 27860, 27902, 27978,74903,81289,81573,86549, 89555, 101684, 102538, and 103311 are exact 12/12 matches for this set of markers, while kits 144195, 123583, 121977, 106119, 109316, 95377, 59028, 56330, 26893, 27145 and 24676 are 11/12 matches.
Based on the 20 extended marker results of 25 markers or more, the reconstructed Boyett(e) 25 marker genetic signature would appear to be:
14 22 14 10 12 13 11 13 13 13 11 30 17 8 9 10 11 23 15 19 30 11 12 15 15
Kits 25086, 30389,89555, 102538 and 10331 are perfect 25/25 matches for this Boyett(e) modal haplotype, while kits 26248, 26893, 27860, 27902, 27938, 30548, 81289, 95377, and 106119 are 24/25 matches. Kits 144195, 24676, 25431, 27145, 30164, and 56330 are 23/25 matches.
With the receipt of the additional 37-marker results, this group now has 12 sets of results at this high resolution level, permitting us now to derive a 37-marker "modal" (predominate set of markers) for this group:
14 22 14 10 12 13 11 13 13 13 11 30 17 8 9 10 11 23 15 19 30 11 12 15 15 10 10 17 17 15 13 18 18 36 38 11 10
Kits 25086 and 89555 are exact 37/37 matches, kits 26248, 26893,26893, 81289 and 103311 are 36/37 matches, kits 25431, 27978, and 102538 are 35/37 matches, kit 144195 is a 34/37 match, and kit 24676 a 33/37 match with this set of results.
NOTE: Kit 126730 represents one of the few matches with the Boyett(e) Y-DNA profile by someone without a variant of the Boyett surname (the results match 10/12, 22/25., and 34/37 with the Group II profile). The owner of this kit has the Ballard surname, but due to the unusual match and close connections between the Boyette and Ballard families in North Carolina, it is likely that he shares a common Boyett male ancestor with the others in Group II.
One can access the full pedigrees of project participants by clicking on the kit numbers at the following project website:
http://bellsouthpwp.net/B/o/Boyt-Boyett/Page.htm
As noted above, these members have been identified as belonging to haplogroup F.
OTHER RESULTS (Kits 39-46)
These are results that are currently unconnected to other members of the Project through their DNA results.
Kit 62433, a descendant of William Shadrack Boyett (b 1845) of Clay Co, GA. By pedigree, the results were expected to match those of kit 27978, also from the Clay Co Boyetts. The results were not a match, so additional testing from this line is currently in progress. Haplogroup - R1b.
Kit 50549, a descendant of Sol Boyet, born in Romania in the 19th century. As various Boyett(e) lines have migrated extensively throughout Europe, this member was tested to investigate possible links with those lines originating in Western Europe. Testing has proved that this lineage is unconnected to others within the Project. The results for this kit appear to belong to haplogroup T.
Kit 33606, a descendant of Jordan Boyatt (b 1806). The pedigree for this member links with kits 24676 and 30548 in Group II, though the DNA results do not match. Haplogroup - R1b
Kit 41392 (a descendant of Joseph Boyette b 1745, NC). These pedigree for this member links to kit 123583 also of Wilson Co. NC, but the results do not match. But the results are a close match for members of the Hester family, also from North Carolina. The results belong to haplogroup I2b.
Kit 43369, a descendant of Robert Boyte (b 1752), and the first Project member from Canada. These results were also assigned to haplogroup I2b, thus excluding a common male descent with members in groups I or II. This member shares matches with those bearing the Townshend surname.
Kit 113203 - French Boyet> William Thomas Boyet> Jayson Joseph Boyet. These results belong to haplogroup I2b
Kit 129572 - Unknown (m. Bettie Boyett b 1872) > William E. Boyett (b 1891, AL) Haplogroup: R1b1
Kit 127631 – John Boyt (b 1739, Gloucestershire, UK) > William Boyt (?) (b 1759, Gloucestershire, UK)> John Boyt (b 1779, UK) > James Boyt b, c 1816. This sample comes from a member in New Zealand. Haplogroup: I2b
CONCLUSIONS
Having distinct Y-DNA haplogroups within a surname project, such as our Group I (R1b1) and Group II (F), would usually mean that members of the groups do not share a common ancestor. But if as suspected our Group I is descended from Sarah Boyett/John Ballard, they would indeed still be related to those in Group II, but not in the direct male line. Both groups would be descended from Thomas Boy(e)t, but as Group I would be descended from a female descendant of Thomas, they would not carry his "Y chromosome" genetic signature that we see in Group II, as this is only passed on in the direct male line. Thus, there is usually a link between the male Y chromosome and surnames, as they are both usually passed along from father to son (the Y chromosome always so). But in Group I, this link between the Y chromosome and the surname would have been broken due to the fact that they took their Boyett surname from the female line, and of course, would have received the Y chromosome from their Ballard male ancestor.
