Background

A note about navigating this website: By clicking on the link in the upper left corner of the homepage marked "Results" you will see a listing of the participants, identified by test number, and their lineage information, when known to us. The "Y-DNA Results" page will show the actual test marker results of the participants, in the same order as they appear on the "Results" page. This Y-DNA surname project is for all researchers with ancestors bearing the surname BANKSTON and the variations listed above. Due to the nature of the Y-DNA test, actual test participants must be males bearing a surname listed above (or any variation I haven’t yet discovered); however, participation in the project by others is encouraged in the form of recruiting family members who qualify to take the Y-DNA test. Many BANKSTONs/BANKSONs/BANKSTONEs in the United States trace their ancestry to an early Swedish immigrant, Anders BENGTSSON (1640-1705), also known as Andrew BANKSTON. We would especially like to encourage those descendants to participate in this project, as the Y-DNA test should be able to identify various branches of the lines of descent, provided enough test participants with known lines of descent are in the database. This could prove very useful to those BANKS(T)ON(E) /etc. researchers who cannot make the connection to the Anders BENGTSSON line by traditional genealogical methods. It is also acknowledged that there may be other BANKS(T)ON(E) /etc. lineages which do not descend from Anders BENGTSSON, and the DNA project can be of value to them as well. The other variations on the surname listed above will similarly be able to use the DNA testing to establish a DNA “signature”, or haplotype, for their lines.NEED MORE INFORMATION ABOUT DNA & TEST RESULTS? There are several sources available for learning more about DNA and DNA testing for genealogy in particular. Two excellent books on the topic, both available from Amazon.com are: “Trace Your Roots with DNA-Using Genetic Tests to Explore Your Family Tree” by Megan Smolenyak Smolenyak & Ann Turner. Published by Rodale. (October 2004) “DNA & Genealogy” by Colleen Fitzpatrick, PhD. Rice Book Press.(2005) An excellent explanation of Y-DNA testing: http://blairdna.com/dna101.html. FTDNA’s tutorial pages:http://www.familytreedna.com/genetic-genealogy-tutorials.aspx This page is full of links to pages on numerous topics, and the FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) tab at the top of the page will take you to more pages with answers to many of your questions.
