Background
June 20, 2011: Please note that co-administrator Karl Weiler is dealing with major family challenges for the next few weeks. Direct project inquiries to Lisa Wilcox at wilcoxery@gmail.com for the time being.
The primary focus of this project is yDNA testing of males bearing the Wilcox surname or one of its variants. Test results can confirm sketchy relationships, or suggest unexpected connections between Wilcox descendants through the direct paternal line.
To the best of our knowledge, the surname Wilcox first appears in Great Britain some time after the Norman Conquest. Surviving records suggest that a majority of those bearing the surname are of English origin, although a tradition of Welsh roots is preserved in some family lore. The Wilcox surname today appears in highest concentrations in the United Kingdom and in former British colonies Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the United States.
Wilcox is roughly the 500th most common surname in the US, and about the 700th in the UK. Variants of the name appear less frequently; these include (but are not limited to) Wilcocks, Wilcockson, Wilcoxson, Willcocks, Willcockson, Willcox, and Willcoxson.
Some direct paternal pedigrees for our families may be viewed at Wilcox World Families.
