Whiting

Background

Whitings in the US are believed to have descended from four early immigrants from England, namely: James Whiting (1609-<1698), who arrived in Elizabeth City, Virginia on the ship George in 1617 Colonel William Whiting (1600-1647) who arrived in Connecticut around 1632. Nathaniel Whiting (1644-1682) who arrived in Lynn, Massachusetts in 1638 and later settled in Dedham, Massachusetts Reverend Samuel Whiting (1597-1679) who arrived in Lynn, Massachusetts in 1636. However, many other immigrants with the Whiting surname or a variant spelling have settled in the US, including Thomas Whiton who arrived in Plymouth, Massachusetts in 1637, Samuel Whiting who immigrated with his family to New York (c1823) and later settled in what is now West Virginia, and many others.
