My FamilyTreeDNA Project Website Title- Background

Administrators

Surnames

Wadkin, Wadkins, Walkins, Watkin, Watkins

Background

In 2001, Troy Watkins was searching for his family's ancestral line. He learned that at FTDNA, he could start a project group and have others who shared the surname "Watkins" provide a DNA sample and compare the results to his and his cousin Pruett Watkins results. If the marker results matched for two or more members, then those that matched were, in fact, cousins, and have a common ancestor. Troy then became the first administrator of the Watkins project. Upon Troy's death, Linda Watkins, Pruett's daughter, took over the project.

New members who had yDNA that did not match Linda's branch were grouped into individual lines where they did have a match. Members of a subgroup line are able to exchange communications and family history data in their search for the common ancestor.

.

GOALS

Our task is to encourage prospective members to provide a sample, join the group, and have your yDNA compared to that of our approximately one hundred members. You then will be assigned to an existing sub group line or possibly match with those who not yet have located a cousin(s).

1) By comparison of yDNA marker values, to locate other individuals of a given blood line that will verify or deny kinship.

2) With a match determined to exist, to go to www.pedigreechart.net to review the ancestry of the matching person(s).

3) To assist in understanding how yDNA is becoming a key genealogical tool. It will, along with the time tested techniques of documentation, afford a member an accurate account of their family history.

.

NEWS

Watkins Project participating member's ancestral lines are now on line at www.pedigreechart.net

You will receive a discount on your test by participating through the Watkins Surname Project, and please remember that the Y-DNA37 test and especially Y-DNA67 test will provide you with the best opportunities for the best match.

Deep Clade testing is available as a means of determining the most ancient ancestor for a given haplogroup and the location of that lines beginnings

RESULTS

The Watkins Group Project presently has one hundred members who have provided a yDNA sample for comparison.

Thirteen individual family tree branches have thus far been identified and are displayed on the Project Website yDNA Results.
