Background

I am from the Canadian side of the Van Buskirk family. I have been slowly doing genealogy for about 10 years but often have had to stop because of other obligations.

Having reached a few dead-ends in genealogy I have been looking into DNA research and have just started a VANBUSKIRK family DNA project at "Family Tree DNA".

The Van Buskirk family name is somewhat unique in its origin and has a fascinating history. Part of that history, as you know, came with the American Revolutionary war. About one half of the family were loyal to the colonies while several stayed loyal to the King. Two Loyalists were Abraham and Jacob Van Buskirk who originally landed in New Brunswick and were granted large land holdings. Abraham then traveled to Nova Scotia and settled there but Jacob's family stayed, at least for a time, in New Brunswick.

To solve some of these issues and from a purely academic view I think that a DNA study of the Van Buskirk line would be very interesting. If you are interested, the information on how to start is in available at www.Familytreedna.com.

If you have questions please email me and I will try to answer them. Additionally, if you would pass this information on to any Van Buskirk connections you have that would be a great help.
