Project Background:
The Thornton surname Y-Chromosome DNA test project was started in June of 2003 in order to see if DNA mapping of Thornton males combined with traditional genealogical research could help sort out the Thomas, Luke and William Thornton’s who seem to be everywhere you look in early Virginia records. We also hope to see if we can break through some of the Thornton brick walls that are out there and connect those lines into known Thornton lineages or prove that they don't connect.
The success of our Project will depend on the number of participants who join our testing group, as well the documentation of the research connected with each line regarding dates and locations of birth, death, marriage, etc.

What constitutes inclusion in a particular group?
In order to be considered a match for one the groups shown below and on the Y Results page, a participant must match exactly on the first 12 markers ( a genetic distance of 0). If additional markers beyond the first 12 are reported, there must be a genetic distance of no more than 2 through 25 markers, no more than 4 through 37 markers and no more than 6 over 67 markers. These numbers are determined by the Family Tree DNA genetic distance reports that indicate whether you are related to another individual or are just probably related. For the purposes of determining inclusion in a group, only those genetic distances that fall into the related category are used (i.e.; Probably or Possibly Related are not close enough for inclusion in a group).
The Virginia_A Group
The group of results colored in yellow in the Y results table represent descendants of Virginia Thornton families, most notably the William "The Immigrant - Gloucester" Thornton and the Henry "The Immigrant" Thornton lines, based on participant research. The DNA test results indicate that these two lines are in fact a single genetic line (due to the fact that there is a maximum genetic distance of 2 between any two participants in this group) and that Henry and William shared a common ancestor within a fairly recent genealogical time frame (a 97% probability that they shared a common ancestor within the last 16 generations per Family Tree DNA - DNATip calculations).
Due to the fact that descendents of two different sons (Francis and William) of William "The Immigrant - Gloucester" Thornton tested and matched, William "The Immigrant - Gloucester" Thornton's 25 Marker signature must also match that shown for the Yellow Group!
The Virginia_B Group
The group of results colored in blue in the Y Results table all document ancestry from Luke Thornton and show a perfect 12/12 match. This indicates that they are most likely related but further refinement of the DNA test (to 25 or 37 markers) will be needed to absolutely confirm the relationship.
The South Carolina_A Group
The group of results colored in green in the Y Results table represent particpants who document their ancestry from South Carolina Thornton lines. Although they match perfectly on 25 of 25 markers, currently there is not a known connection between the two participants.
The Red Group
Two individuals have tested and matched exactly on 12 markers, however, no genealogical information for these two individuals has been received in order to determine a location or possible common ancestor.
Results with no background color
The results with no background color do not currently have a match with any other participant or fall into a probably/possibly related genetic distance. Until such time as additional markers are tested and the genetic distance fall into the 'Related' range, these participants must be considered unique lineages. | Family Tree DNA - Genealogy by Genetics, Ltd.
