The STIRM DNA Surname project began in April of 2005 due to the desire of two men to learn whether their ancestors were related. Both had hit a brick wall only 4 generations back! Figuring that others may also have had the same difficulties, it was decided that there must be a better way to find more detailed outlets to collect genealogical information and found it here at Family Tree DNA.
