Background

Spartanburg was created a county in 1785 being created from Ninety-Sixth Dist.  In 1791 Pinckney Dist. was created that was comprised of Spartanburg, Union, York and Chester Counties.  Pinckney Dist. existed only until 1800 when the four counties form which it was made were created as districts in their own right.  Spartanburg was a district until 1868 when once again it became Spartanburg Co.  In 1897 Cherokee Co., was created out of parts of Spartanburg, Union and York Counties.  Spartanburg was the scene of several major battles during the Revolutionary War including the Battle of Cowpens.  After the war it became a melting pot of people, with people from Virginia and North Carolina and other states purchasing land.  A number of these later moved on to Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee and other points west.

This site is for people who can trace their ancestry back to the keystone state, whether they just move there for a short while before moving on or came to Spartanburg and remained.
