Background
SHOCKLEY DNA PROJECT
The worldwide discounted Shockley DNA project was established to help determine the various Shockley ancestors and connect Shockley families through DNA matches. We accept all types of DNA testing including Family Finder, Y-DNA testing for paternal Shockley lines and mtDNA testing for those with a Shockley in their female line. All Shockley descendants are invited and encouraged to participate. The success of the project depends on the number of participants. The only requirement is submission of your proved Shockley ancestral and direct line data which is crucial to comparing with DNA matches.
===============================================================================
The three primary tests for genealogy are: Family Finder autosomal DNA; Y-DNA for your direct paternal line; and, mtDNA for your direct maternal line:
**Family Finder tests 563,800 autosomal SNPs and 15,789 X chromosome SNPs and can provide distant relationships. It is especially valuable for adoptees and brick-wallers. Both males and females can take this test.
**Y-DNA is for one's direct paternal line and can only be done by a male. It is your father, his father, his father's father etc on up the male line.
Y-DNA12 markers is more for anthropology; DNA matches can be long before surnames came into existance.
Y-DNA37 markers is very, very good since it brings DNA matches much closer in time and weeds out insignificant matches.
Even better is the full Y-DNA67 markers test with Y-DNA111 the newest addition.
Note: If one orders Y12 or Y37 markers an upgrade to higher markers can be ordered at any time without need for further testing.
**mtDNA is for your direct maternal line - your mother, her mother, her mother's mother etc on up the female line. Females can test for mtDNA as can a son for his mother's female line (aforementioned).
mtDNA is for low-resolution;
mtDNAPlus is for the better high-resolution.
Full Gnome (aka mtDNA Mega) is the top of the line - any DNA match with this test reflects a definite genetic relative.
Note: If one orders mtDNA or mtDNAPlus an upgrade can be ordered at any time without need for further testing.

The surname Shockley is of uncertain origin. It is most probably an English habitational name from Shocklach in Cheshire; named in Old English with sceocca ‘goblin’, ‘evil spirit’ + læcc ‘boggy stream’. In the 17th century, the name was most common in Buckinghamshire, England. The name may also be an Americanized form of Swiss-German Schoechli, a topographic name meaning ‘barn’, a diminutive of Schoch. (Source: Dictionary of American Families, Oxford University Press) The name of Adam de Shackerly was first seen about 1200 in English records.
