Project Results –

Y-DNA results show one major group and several smaller family lines.   This is not a statistical coverage of the entire Sheffield distribution. It just means one line has been more active in DNA testing than others.

The larger part of the group has a very rare haplotype.  The designation is I-M253.  M-253 is a defining SNP for the I1 branch of the y-DNA tree. This branch split from other I1+ lines in the early Bronze Age (approximately 4500 years before present).  Less than 1% of all I1 lines are of our type, the rest of our side of the split having become extinct.  The I1 Haplogroup originated in central Europe and spread mostly north into Scandinavia and northeast into England and the Low Countries.

The other members represent various R1b1a2 haplotypes which now consists of 70% of European males. Analysis of this project and else ware show several family lines with only two or more members. Obviously, more members are needed to define these small families.
