Welcome to the Satterly-lee-ley Surname DNA Project!!

According to Goldie Satterlee Moffat Fowler, a nearly life-long genealogist devoted to studying the family name, three Satterly-lee-ley men came to our shores in the late 1600's. Although their last names may have been spelled differently, they are considered to have been related to each other. Nicholas Satterly-lee-ley settled in Rhode Island, Benedict in Connecticut and William on the north shore of Long Island. Some think that they were all full or half brothers. Others that William might have been a father to the two others.
 
Most present day Satterly-lee-ley men are probably descended from one of the above individuals. In addition, there are known to be a few other Satterly-lee-ley men who may have come from England early on but separate from and possibly unrelated to Nicholas, Benedict and William.
 
Our initial effort will be to more clearly delineate the exact lineage of each Satterly-lee-ley family line by studying the y-linked DNA profiles of living Satterly-lee-ley men. Later, we will begin gathering information from women who may be seeking information about their Satterly-lee-ley ancestry and from men who do not have a Satterly-lee-ley surname but who have had Satterly-lee-ley members somewhere in their past.

The y-chromosome or sex chromosome is passed virtually unchanged from father to son over many generations, thus providing a clear and unambigous pattern of familial identification. Over many generations, occasional mutations appear which help separate one genetic group from another. For example, if Nicholas, Benedict and William Satterly-lee-ley had the exact same father, their y-DNA probe would be virtually identical, and that DNA (signature) would be passed on to all of their Satterly-lee-ley male heirs. On the other hand, if one or more of the men were not DIRECTLY related, even though they had the same surname, their DNA probes would be different. The differences can be measured by certain sites or loci on the y-chromosome.
 
We will first try to locate KNOWN and TRUE descendants of Nicholas, Benedict and William Satterly-lee-ley. We say KNOWN from their own family genealogic histories and TRUE since they MUST have direct y-linked DNA to their most recent common ancestor In this case, the MRCA must be Nicholas, Benedict or William. As you might imagine, adoption and other, shall we say, genetic disturbances, might allow a Satterly-lee-ley male to have a Satterly-lee-ley surname WITHOUT having any related Satterly-lee-ley y-chromosme DNA. Once we have collected appropriate DNA profiles on known and true descendants of Nicholas, Benedict, William and perhaps a few other as yet unknown Satterly-lee-ley men, we will be able to more easily connect others.

Please remember that I do not purport to be an expert in Satterly-lee-ley family history or genealogy. Nor do I have any special expertise in the genetics of familial DNA. Rather, I view this as a labor of love in which I will hope to use my lengthy education, medical training and experience to help ensure the overall success of this project.
