The Prater Surname DNA Study began in March 2006. It will be several months before a significant number of results will be posted.

Probably the earliest Prather in the colonies was Thomas Prather who arrived in VA in 1622 on the ship Marie Providence. His birth is given as Wiltshire, England, in 1604. How many of today's Prather/Prater lines come from him? Certainly there were later Prather/Prater immigrations. Were those people related to Thomas? Are there still Prather/Prater cousins in England? Canada? Other countries? DNA testing can play a part in discovering the answers.

Any male carrying the name Prater, Prather or a variant spelling--worldwide--is eligible to join the Prater Surname DNA Study. The Prater Surname DNA Study will enable Praters/Prathers, etc to sort themselves into related groups. It is hoped that the interpretation of the results will point the direction for further research in any particular line.
