Background

The history of the Pacek surname and its variants is complex. Most families bearing the surname trace their recent ancestry through a small area of the former Austro-Hungarian provence of Galicia. The area was (and still is) a true cultural melting pot, with a mix of ethnic Poles, Slovaks, Hungarians, Germans, and a sizable Jewish population. The target surnames can be found in all of these groups. yDNA testing of these individual family lines offers a unique opportunity to examine the degree of genetic variation among them.
