HAPLOGROUP--
Ozment belongs to "Ruslan's" haplogroup subclade R1b1c / S21+ (Ethnoancestry.com) per 2005 UofAZ nomenclature (or R1b3 / S21+ per Jobling 2003 YCC nomenclature), and a variant of the Western Atlantic Modal Haplotype (WAMH), which may share a common genetic signature when testing only 12 markers. R1b includes ~50 percent of Western Europe, including Neolithic Britain, Saxon, and Celt. [Denmark is roughly one-third each R1b, R1a, and I1a, with a bit of Q and N. The Nordic haplogroup (and some of Spain) is typically I (eye).]

The haplogroup was accurately predicted.
But, an actual SNP Test (single nucleotide polymorphism) has also been performed on
the Group Administrator, as with extra tests,
below.

ETHNOANCESTRY's "The Works" (SNPs) -- R1b1c* / S21+ [R1b1c9*]. M269+; S21+. M37-; M65-; M126-; M153-; M160-; M167- / SRY2627-.

TOTAL OF TESTED ALLELES --
This will be about 75 Y-STRs within
the year ahead (for the G.A.).

We still won't have OZMENT MODAL VALUES
for anything above FTDNA's 37 markers,
UNLESS a few more participate in
extended haplotype testing.
Group discounts (~45% off) for DNA-FP tests
are available through Anne Webb Nelson (AWNRDC@aol.com). Also, RG -- $115.

In DYS Tests (for 37 allelles) our 23 / 11 / 13 North Sea R1b signature (in DYS 390, 391, 392) may represent a Continental R1b [Angleland / Schleswig-Holstein (Denmark), Saxony (Germany), Jutland (Denmark), Friesland (Netherlands), etc.], rather than an Atlantic Fringe R1b with 24 / 11 / 13 from the Isles. Some 24 / 11 R1b comes from southern Norway. I read that 23 / 11 has about a 7 to 8 percent presence in London, however. Also, 23 / 11 in England is said to have a 15 percent probability of being Ancient Briton and an 85 percent probability of being Continental.

R1b1c* / S21+ (U106) -- R1b1c9* -- occurs at about 20%
in the British Isles. Over half of R1b1c in Holland and
Friesland is also S21+.

TRADITION BUSTING--
It appears that the oral tradition of Martha Arden and James Henry Ozment, Sr., is untrue for #21791. His kinship with #21857 and #25682, having clear paper trails from Maryland, establishes this. John Jasper Ozment's line also had this legend, so it would be well to test one of his descendants, as well. But, currently the interest is not there among his known descendants. The one caveat is that there could be a most recent common ancestor farther back in time.

FTDNA's LAB RESULTS--
Most of the current panel have been shown to be of the Maryland line.
Most are of Richard Ozment (~1739-1817). One appears to be from
a grandson of Thomas Ozment and Priscilla Dobson (Richard, b. 1789).
One test from Maryland, itself, may prove to be that of the line
of John Ozment, Jr.

But additionally, #21791's father, #25683, has the same mutation as his (and not the Ozment modal), so these results did not tighten their line's statistical relatedness to the test panel. But, the 12-marker results of #29055, a first cousin of #25683, showed his DYS 439 = 12 (Ozment modal). Thus, this branchline's mutation occurred either with #25683, himself, or with his father.
It might be possible to check a brother of #25683 to determine it.

LATEST LAB RESULTS--
A paternal uncle (#32860) of #21856 has tested
yDNA and mtDNA and the G.A.'s son (#36954)
has tested mtDNA.

KINSHIP AMONG PARTICIPANTS--
(Most are 35/37, 36/37, and 37/37.)

The current matching markers (alleles) are --
#21792 -- 5 / 12 with #25683 / #21791; 6 / 12 with #21857 / #21856 / #25682 (not related to any of the
above during the period of surnames);

#25683 -- 37 -marker test (plus mtDNAPlus: J* "Jasmine"). DYS 439 = 11 mutation, and 37 / 37 with his son, #21791;

#21791 -- 37/37 with his father, #25683; 35 / 37 with #21857; 36 / 37 with #21856 / #25682 (related to all of these) (plus mtDNAPlus: U5b "Ursula") (plus son #36954 (mtDNAPlus: M*);

#21857 -- 35 / 37 with #25683 / #21791; 36 / 37 with #21856 / #25682 (related to all of these);

#21856 / #32860 -- 36 / 37 with #25683 / #21791 / #21857; 37/37 with #25682 (related to all of these)
(plus mtDNA: T2 "Tara");

#25682 -- 36 / 37 with #25683 / #21791 / #21857; 37/37 with #21856 (related to all of these);

#29055 -- a first cousin of #25683; his 12-marker results returned 2-24-05. He has DYS 439 = 12 (the Ozment modal), that is, without the mutation.
97.28% = 100-200 years (4-8 generations)
36/37 with #25683 / #21791 / #21857;
37/37 with #21856 / #25682
(related to all of these)

-----

CURRENT MATCHING PARTICIPANTS'
DEGREES OF SEPARATION--
ACTUAL: 7 generations,
with Richard Ozment, Sr., as the common ancestor
in the 8th generation. [One line likely has
Thomas Ozment in the 9th(?) generation.
Another line currently testing likely has
John Jr. in the 9th (?) generation.]

-----

PARTICIPANTS' STATISTICALLY SUGGESTED
LIKELY PERCENTAGES OF RELATEDNESS
utilizing FTDNA's TiP calculator
(based on the latest mutation rates and
the nominal 25 years per generation)--

#25683 / #21791 vs. #21857 (2 mutations off the modal: 1 apiece) --
62.94% = 175-275 years (7-11 generations);
88.53% = 275-375 years (11-15 generations)
96.81% = 375-475 years (15-19 generations)

#25683 / #21791 / #21857 (1 mutation off the Ozment modal) vs. #21856 / #25682 (no mutations: Ozment modal) --
74.38% = 175-275 years (7-11 generations);
94.07% = 275-375 years (11-15 generations)
96.70% = 375-475 years (15-19 generations)

#21856 / #32860 vs. #25682 vs. #29055
(no mutations: Ozment modal)
83.49% = 000-100 years (0-4 generations);
97.28% = 100-200 years (4-8 generations)
99.55% = 200-300 years (8-12 generations)

M.C.R.A. (MOST RECENT COMMON ANCESTOR)--
RICHARD OZMENT, SR. (~1739, MD - 1817, NC).
His SONS were --
SAMUEL, RICHARD, JOHN, JAMES, and THOMAS.

PUTATIVE ANCESTORS OF PARTICIPANTS--
#21792 -- THOMAS (s/o Richard and Rachel)
#25683 -- JOHN (s/o Richard and Rachel)
#21791 -- JOHN (s/o Richard and Rachel)
#29055 -- JOHN (s/o Richard and Rachel)
#21857 -- RICHARD, JR. (s/o Richard and Rachel)
#21856 -- SAMUEL (s/o Richard and Rachel)
#32860 -- SAMUEL (s/o Richard and Rachel)
#25682 -- JAMES (s/o Richard and Rachel)

PARTICIPANTS' PEDIGREES--

#21792 -- Descendant of James S., potential son of THOMAS
and Hulda Gamble who md. 21 May 1839 NC,
(as J.S. lived in NC with Price, Thomas' grandson).
But, perhaps he was adopted, as #21792 is unrelated to the current test panel.

#25683, #21791, #29055 ---- Descendants of Alfred (b. 1804 NC) (a Methodist),
probable son of JOHN (who arrived in Wilson Co., TN, by Feb.1811).
Alfred's brother, James H., fought 1814-15 (enlisted in TN).
Alfred and James died in Drew Co., AR.
John's wife was apparently dead by 1820.

#21857 -- Descendant of NC's Haward (b. ~1780, MD), son of RICHARD JR.,
and Elisabeth Lecompte (whose mother was a Hayward).

#21856 / #32860 -- Descendants of William Lindsey Ozment (b. ~1832 TN),
very likely a son of John H. Ozment
(1790, NC - 1860, Rutherford Co., TN)
(and Nancy Griffin? md. 1817 Guilford Co., NC).
(Probably SAMUEL's son John.)

#25682 -- Descendant of Thomas C. Ozment, son of Thomas Ozment,
a son of JAMES. James' oldest (?) son Thomas (b. ~1797)
md. Polly Bland 11 Dec. 1817 NC. So, James must've MOVED TO
TN 1818-1819, UNLESS his wife, Elizabeth, didn't die by 1820,
and remained behind in NC, and unless his son, Thomas,
then, stayed behind with her. But, James DID remarry
to Levina Osment on 9 Nov. 1820 in TN.
(d/o John of TN, or perhaps of Levin of NC?).

WE NEED OTHER PARTICIPANTS--
37-marker tests are preferred.

VALUE OF SLIGHT DNA VARIATIONS--
Perhaps the peculiar marker mutations in the primary lines
could later be used to DETERMINE IN WHOSE BRANCH LINE
others belong, if not known:
e.g., 9th marker (DYS 439) in #25683 / #21791; 32nd marker in #21857 (DYS 576),
which are fast-moving (fast-mutating) markers (alleles).
THE DYS 439 HAS NOW BEEN RESOLVED.
It began approximately 1887-1917.

PARTICIPANT WISH LIST--

1) We need a descendant of JOHN JASPER OZMENT
(Gene Autry's ggf)
b. ~1799 NC (TX / OK lines)
(who might be JAMES' son, as Daniel Jasper Ozment
was one grandson of JAMES through Thomas.)
We know of two, who currently remain disinterested. Yet a third is being contacted.

2) We need another descendant of THOMAS
(to compare with the results obtained by #21792: adoption?).
A(nother) descendant of Price Ozment or of
Joseph Rashfield Ozmint, anyone?

3) We need descendants of JOHN's documented sons,
ELI and RICHARD [S. (? )], to compare with
the results obtained by #29055, etc.).

4) We need descendants of MANLOVE / MANLIFF Ozment,
probable brother (twin?) of HA(Y)WARD / HOWARD Ozment
(to compare with results obtained by #21857).
A third brother was probably named RICHARD.

5) We need another descendant of SAMUEL
(to compare with the results obtained by #21856).
A descendant of his son, Jonathan Ozment
(~1778, MD - ~1825, TN), anyone?
[Md. Sarah / Sally Neather(l)y 19 Nov. 1799 NC.]

6) Additionally, we need someone related to the Osment actors,
Michael Eugene, Haley Joel, and Emily Jordan Osment.
(Are they from MD's Osment or NC's Asmundi?)
Their ancestor was John Osment of Bradley Co., TN,
in the mid-1800s. His line moved to Alabama, etc.

7) We need someone related to the Osmond singers.

8) We need someone descended from the Italian Asmundi line.

9) We need participants from France, as well,
such as from Lorraine or Alsace-Lorraine.

10) WE NEED PARTICIPANTS FROM ENGLAND, as well.

11) ANY and ALL are encouraged to test
(even Spanish Osmeña).

MARYLAND AND ENGLAND'S PAPER TRAIL--

On 31 Jan. 1709/10 (O.S.),
MD's John Osment signed Richard Bennett's
power-of-attorney document in London.
A copy is in the MD State Archives.
It was witnessed by Robert Torrens (the poa),
and John Osment, Thomas Addison, and
David Greenhill, Jr.
John named his third son, Richard.
Richard Bennett probably transported John Osment,
as he and other wealthy men (Lloyd,
Goldsborough, etc.) likely needed a tailor.
Bennett willed land (Neglect) to John Jr. in 1749
(or if without issue, then to his brother,
Thomas Osment).

Jan. 1709 / 10 minus 25 years equals 1684.
In Maryland, at least, one needed to be 25 to be a juror.
~1721 (John's third son, Richard) minus 1684 equals
37 years of age (a possibility for John).

Neither Taylors' Guild records nor business directories of London have yet been
located, which might contain pertinent information.
A tax list of St. Katherine's didn't show any Osment
or Osmond. "The Inhabitants of London in 1638" showed a Mr. OSMON
in St. Andrews in the Wardrobe (as well as a John OSLAND next to a
Fleetwood SMITH) and a William OSMON (goldsmith) in
St. Leonard's, Foster Lane. Thus, deep London roots are not assured.

John OSMOND and Anne SMITH married 23 Oct. 1683
in St. Katherine's by the Tower, London / Middlesex.
No children were listed as baptized in that parish.
MD's John Osment from London
was kin to Thomas and Matthew Smith, Jr. of MD.
There were some Matthew Smiths in St. Katherine's
(not necessarily of the right age parameters).

Thomas OSMON and Grace HILL were also wed there 24 July 1684,
and THOMAS could be this John's brother.
No children were listed as baptized there.
MD's John Osment named his second son Thomas.

A John Osman of Southwark, Hampshire, was
reprieved upon condition of transportation in 1701
to Barbados. His 7 years would've ended in 1708.
He was not on Barbados' 1713 census, only a
black slave with the given name of Osman.

Could such a convict EVER have returned to
England on business, such as with Richard Bennett?

There were no Osmans in Southwark's parish.

But, a John Osman was christened 12 Apr. 1684
in Portsmouth, Hampshire, s/o John and ELEANOR.
His brother, RICHARD OSMENT, md. Frances Cleverly 24 Mar. 1714.

There were numerous Osment families in Devon and Dorset, etc.

John Osment, son of John Osment, was born in Devon in 1672, ten years earlier than one might expect for Maryland's John. However, he is the most proximate John Osment in the IGI with the exact spelling intact, apart from 1672 Devon's John Osement, son of John Osement and Deborah Saturleigh (d/o RICHARD Saturleigh). No other exact spelling shows up between 1672 and 1699. Some other proximate births and christenings appear below.

The Osmond singers' ancestor came from Burford, Oxfordshire.
A collateral line was John Osman born there in 1682.
Burford is 70 miles NW of London, as the crow flies.
