Project Goals
DNA is a powerful tool for family history studies, although one with limitations. For example, yDNA matches across surnames are often accidental, especially when very common DNA values are involved. However, many families have lived together in the old Orangeburgh District area for several centuries, and linkages between these families are complex. This DNA study group permits convenient comparison of mtDNA results to help resolve problems associated with unidentified maternal ancestors. It also allows comparison of yDNA results across surnames when there has been adoption or some other instance of undocumented paternity. Because many of the original settlers of the area migrated together to SC, it may be possible to identify previously unknown pre-immigration links between families. In any of these cases, very careful consideration of documentary evidence must supplement DNA studies.
